Re: Dear fellow 1Ls
No imposition and this thread could have easily been a lounge topic. I tend to just ignore almost everything the poster with dung in his SN types. At least as far as I am concerned you are welcome to ask anything you like in here.RickyDnwhyc wrote:Wasn't trying to impose this information upon you guys.
Just wanted to get some more opinions on it so I know if I have to give a sh*t about class participation / sucking up to professors during my first year.
The answers are unsettling, I suppose I'll just make a judgement call based on the professor.
In general, sucking up to the profs will neither hinder nor improve your grades. I like interacting with the profs because it is my nature to interact with everyone but I know the security guards by first name too so it has nothing to do with grades or jockeying for position. For the investment it costs, I am going to enjoy the ride as well as concentrate on grades ...

This is your schtick.Bildungsroman wrote:Get out of the Forum for Law School Students. 0Ls shouldn't be opining on law professor behavior and law school grading in this subforum; if you want a place for 0Ls without firsthand experience to speak authoritatively about experiences in law school I recommend one of the many other places on TLS where that behavior is the norm.RickyDnwhyc wrote:[0L]

I am old and did time in the military and my anus gets nowhere near as puckered as yours over petty bullshit. Wonder why that is.JCFindley wrote:4. Yes, I am old. Between that and too much time in the military I have no tolerance for wishy washy answers of any kind. Again, do as you like though.

Re: Dear fellow 1Ls
The problem with thinking this way is the forced curve. At most schools every student is going to participate within the expected range and therefore the bump doesn't really help. This isn't like undergrad where a student can get bumped from a B+ to an A- without that affecting other people. If one student is bumped up, another student is generally bumped down, and since profs say participation cannot really hurt you then it makes it just as difficult to help you. It reminds me of a story I heard from a friend in another section. The prof gave an extra credit assignment, totally optional, to help your grade. Guess who did the assignment - everyone - because in a forced curve there is really nothing optional, if one person is going to do it, everyone is going to.RickyDnwhyc wrote:Just a curious 0L here...northwood wrote:You're an idiot. The profs don't care about participation and maybe the person isn't completely confident in their answer. The tone of voice may tell the prof that the class doesn't fully grasp te concept and it needs to be reviewed. But it means nothing in regards to ur final exam grade.
Not so sure about the bolded. Look at this thread http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 8&start=25
It sounds like there are profs out there that bump up and down based on how much they like you.

I am most likely older than both of you, now STFU and get off my lawn. And JC, chill a bit, it's only been a few weeks.bjsesq wrote:I am old and did time in the military and my anus gets nowhere near as puckered as yours over petty bullshit. Wonder away, we have pretty much moved past that issue and are on a tangential subject at this point. I think the consensus is that I am simply an insufferable douchebag by nature and it is simply something I have to deal with then suck up and drive on at this point. FWIW, it really wasn't all that puckered and I didn't lose any sleep over it but was merely an overly animated observation.bjsesq wrote:I am old and did time in the military and my anus gets nowhere near as puckered as yours over petty bullshit. Not so much upset as a little perturbed and then the tourettes took over? Fair enough.JCFindley wrote:Wonder away, we have pretty much moved past that issue and are on a tangential subject at this point. Also old, also time in the military. And if after spending time in the military you are somehow annoyed enough by the "valley girl" upspeak to comment on it...well, I guess I'd have liked to have been in *your* unit, because I really can't imagine there will be anything waiting for me at law school that is as mind-numbing, pointless, and stupid as a lot of the bullshit I have put up with in the military.JCFindley wrote:Yes, I am old. Actually, my units were for the most part a hoot. I would have to go ALL the way back to Army Airborne School at Benning when I was a mere cadet to think of anything completely mind numbing. (The training itself was great, it was ALL the time not training that was a PITA.) Beyond deployments being Ground-Hawg day can't think of all that much that really annoyed me.elterrible78 wrote:Also old, also time in the military. One of the more annoying things in class 1L year is how people tend to preface their comments with "this may be wrong/stupid/off base." Yea it might be...no one in the class knows much about the law.....just spit out whatever caused you to raise your hand...jeez
