convince me to drop out of an 11-8 ranked law school!
Greetings, trolls!
Just finished 1L at school ranked 11-8. Have strong UG academic record; 2 years as paralegal in V5 firm in bay area (with good recommendations from attys/parthers I worked for); ‘good’ 1L job as intern with a judge in the 9th circuit. Just found out I was accepted to at least a secondary journal for next year, but won’t know about law review for a few more weeks.
1L grades were disappointing. I’m (at best) either directly at the median or (at worst) around .1 below it. Data hasn’t been released yet, so it’s hard to tell exactly where I lie or what my class rank is. I estimate it is anywhere between 50% exactly and 60%, but I doubt much lower than this.
So, should I drop out? These new ABA numbers don’t look too good, especially for a NYC big law aspirant like me. I have no debt now, but will probably have about 50K by the time I graduate.
(note that the other alternative is to go through with OCI/EIW/Whatever you call it before deciding what to do…)

Dropping out now is a bit premature, don't you think?

I think it may be premature, hence the alternative indicated above. However, if I were to resolve myself to dropping out of school now, I could be hustling a real job instead of spending all summer 'working' at the courthouse...lukertin wrote:(note that the other alternative is to go through with OCI/EIW/Whatever you call it before deciding what to do…)

You have no debt now and only 50k on the horizon? Even at slightly below median there's no reason to not take a shot at interviews in the fall and see where you end up. Slightly below median at MVP is not a death sentence.

Median or slightly below at a middle T14 with no debt and a 9th Cir. externship for 1L who wants to go to NYC (the market with the lowest standards for grades in the country)? Seems like the most rational choice...

You've been reading too much TLS for T2 schools my friend.
Go have a drink and relax.

I'm leaning towards "drop out," but only because you put "11-8 ranked" instead of "ranked 8-11" and it's bugging me.

You'll get NYC big law unless your personality is as bad IRL as it is online.dropout123 wrote:Greetings, trolls!

Lol @ the idea that a judicial internship is a "good" 1L summer job.

The only good 1L summer job is a 1L Big Law SA or an externship with the organization you want to work at after graduation if you are on a PI track.
Everything else is just "okay".

The fact that you have two years of actual legal experience might give you a boost, despite your grades.

It does not appear from what you've told us that you should drop out.
Yet, your thread is titled "Convince me to drop out". So that probably means you really want to drop out and are looking for validation. Why don't you tell us why you really want out, and we'll validate you?

This is a very tame response considering it's somewhere around the 1289371289371289th time he's brought it up.Bildungsroman wrote:Lol. Jesus, we get it shoeshine, you're very proud of your 1L SA position and want the whole world to know.
