Write On Citations

Post by Extension_Cord » Sun May 13, 2012 8:22 pm

Are you supposed to feel confident in your citations? I feel like mine are a good guess but these things are not laid out in the bluebook perfectly. I'm just combining rules and having to make judgment calls. Is this the way it's supposed to be?

There will be some citations that the BB won't have a direct rule for, in which case you will just need to analogize it as best you can to a rule that covers a similar type of citation. It's hard to say how many of these there should be--totally depends on the article and the type of works they're citing to.

Make sure you go through ALL your citations at least 3 times, and try to space each one out as much as possible. You'd be surprised even the third time around how many small things you've missed/done incorrectly.

They purposefully design the citations for write-ons so you're forced to essentially make one up using 2 (or more) other rules.

Many of the citations will be pulled from multiple rules. Make sure to read over it carefully because sometimes one rule will apply to one situation, but another will apply in a different situation.
