Is this the end for Lexis?

Post by shoeshine » Tue Apr 17, 2012 12:43 am

I know there are a ton of lawyers and maybe some 3Ls out there that are used to the old Lexis, but it seems like WestlawNext is much better than LexisAdvance. Once everyone makes the switch is Lexis doomed as a search service?

In my mind it is ranked like this: WestlawNext >>>>>>>Lexis Advance>>Google Scholar

Is this just skewed perception? Do people at other schools like LexisAdvance better?

Lexis Advance is cheaper, especially for small firms. And Lexis Advance is much closer to Westlaw Next on than it is to google scholar. Relying only on that would be malpractice, it doesn't shepardize, doesn't contain nearly as many documents or types of documents, etc.

I don't know anyone who voluntarily uses Lexis, primarily because Next is the bomb-diggity.

I know. It's painful. But Next is so much better.

I still use regular Lexis. My school's Lexis rep is not pleased.

I get everything I need done with LexisOld and Next. I see no need to waste time in the week of law school I have left learning a new system when I get to learn it again at the firm in four months.

Next is a trainwreck...

But it's still better than Lexis

Once Google gets its act together, it'll be the end for Westlaw Next as well.

I never use either WL product. Just like Lexis more and always have. Will probably use Lexis Advance a bunch this summer since it seems to be cheaper than old school Lexis (at least for initial searches).

A number of states are lexis states - majority of firms there use lexis. NM is one of them. Lexis won't be going anywhere anytime soon. It's too darn inexpensive.

I'm sure this has been done before but I want to see the results. Come vote, y'all.

West law next is leaps and bounds better than Lexis. The firm I work at has both but I never use Lexis. In fact the whole West Law Suite is pretty amazing. WestLaw Caselogistix leaves a little bit of functionality to be desired But with Next, Livenote, and Caselogistix I don't see how Lexis can compete.

Lexis has exclusive access to a lot of SEC and CFTC Commission Proceedings. So if you want to dig into securities, Westlaw doesn't cut mustard.

According to my Westlaw Rep. at least half of the NLJ 250 has.

Anecdotally, the firm I am going to this summer has.

Lexis Advance is such a confusing pile of shit that old Lexis beats it hands-down. That said, as some posters mentioned, there is content you just can't get on one service or the other, so don't write off Lexis yet.
