ITT: The single worst day in your law school experience
Mine was yesterday. All of the following happened yesterday, April 11th.
PART I:
> Be a 2L
> Two months ago, submit application for high-paying, prestigious summer position
> One month ago, actually get scheduled for an interview
> Read the interview email as saying interview is on Wednesday, April 18th
> Ecstatic
> This is the big one, guys!
> Do a lot of research prep
> Even start working out so I can even look physically better for interview
> Buy expensive new pair of shoes
> Go to morning class, Wednesday April 11th
> Unfamiliar number calls me during class
> Ignore till class is over
> Listen to voicemail after class
> My Face When it’s the interviewer for high-paying, prestigious summer position
> He sounds pissed
> He wants to know if I got into car crash on way to interview and am lying in ditch, dead
> OR
> if I am just a giant retard for standing him up for this morning’s interview
> MFW when I check my email and it actually does say April 11th and not April 18th
> MFW I’ve been preparing and prepping for nothing, there is no April 18th interview
> Frantically leave interviewer a message apologizing profusely, ask for any possibility of reschedule, say I am suffering from a “Personal Issue”
> AKA, a severe case of the herp-da-derps
> He never responds

PART II
Several hours later within *same* day:
> Two weeks ago, had two really good interviews for also fairly prestigious, well-paying legal positions for the summer
> Feeling good; really want either position if aforementioned “big one” doesn’t fall through
> Have actual DREAMS about logging into email, seeing “Congratulations, we would love to have you this summer…” emails
> Wake up feeling hopeful every morning
> At school on Wednesday April 11th
> Crushed I bombed interview for “big one,” but holding on to hope that one of the other two positions comes through
> Manage to shuffle into afternoon class
> Get rejection emails from both positions
>… within 30 minutes of each other
> WHAT ARE THE ODDS.
> Skip evening class, cannot handle school anymore today
> Get in car to drive home
> MFW I didn’t realize it is 6:00PM rush hour traffic
> Cry by myself in traffic for 2 hours the entire 15 miles it takes to get home

PART III
When I finally got home:
> Roomie’s out somewhere, I have no shoulder to cry on
> Have meltdown by myself in empty apartment
> Decide to just eat all the left over Easter chocolate
> Find roomie’s forgotten packets of Ritz crackers buried in pantry
> I have a mild gluten allergy; really should not be eating Ritz crackers
> Decide to eat all of the Ritz crackers
> But they’re stale
> Decide to wash down Ritz crackers down with roomie’s chocolate milk
> I am lactose intolerant
> Lapse into the sweet agony of sugar and dairy coma
> Lay prone on floor watching an “Intervention” episode
> It’s about a tragic crack head named Kaylene
> I feel tears run down my cheeks
> Are they for me, or are they for Kaylene?
> Fall asleep on floor
> Wake up 12 hours later on April 12th (today)
> Eyes swollen, face covered in drool, stomach bloated
> I've already missed my morning class
> Step on weight scale
> Find out I just gained 2 pounds in one night
> Start crying again
> Then
> Start laughing
> Realize I hadn’t told anybody I know that I had *any* of the three interviews
> No one knows my failures but me
> So, it could have been worse, actually
SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME THEY’VE HAD SIMILAR AWFUL DAYS IN LAW SCHOOL WHERE EVERYTHING JUST UNLOADS AT ONCE.

Rough. Tough to top that all on one day.

Re: ITT: The single worst day in your law school experience
My condolences OP, but if you're a 1l it's not that big a deal. Of course it sucks to not get a high paying job 1l summer but in terms of your long term job prospects it doesn't make much of a difference. If you're a 2l or 3l then... fuck...
Read your emails more carefully from now on
e: just saw the 2l edit. Yeah, nobody is topping this. That's pretty much the worst thing that could happen to a law student

Re: ITT: The single worst day in your law school experience
Sorry to hear about that.
Prior to law school I missed an interview because I forgot to toss it onto my schedule and the person who arranged it only sent me a single email to schedule it and never followed up after that, so it fell off of my radar.
Well, after missing it the recruiter who I was working with called me up, obviously furious. I got my ass chewed out pretty good, I was completely flustered and shaking afterwards. Felt like shit.
Hang in there. Some of the best advice I have gotten from my family who went to law school before me:
1. Law school is a constant exercise in how bad you want it. It will beat you down and point you to the door, it's on you to get back up and take some more.
2. Everything goes back to its long-term average after long enough, so spikes in your emotions will eventually subside and you'll go back to feeling like normal eventually.
Caveat: I understand that none of that helps at a time like this and I don't expect it to. I just wanted to offer my support for you

Sounds more like something from a legal drama TV show than real life.

It's at times like these that I realize how alone I am. No one "really" cares what happens to you, jobwise or lifewise. Save for a supporting family members, or an SO, every battle is fought alone for yourself and the miseries of failure that result from the losses are swallowed with sadness alone.

You were born alone, you'll die alone. Don't fret it. This too shall pass.merc280 wrote:It's at times like these that I realize how alone I am. It's real life. No, he didn't ask if I was dead, but he sounded irritated and actually said "I don't know if you had some sort of accident or some kind of emergency on the way, but we've been here waiting for you. We did have an interview scheduled for this morning, as detailed in the email sent on blahblahblahblah"PARTY wrote:elaborate three-act troll?
Thanks to everyone who offered kind words of encouragement. I still feel kind of weird, like some part of my brain is still in free-fall. If it helps anyone, you probably (fortunately) will never have to experience a one-two-three punch like that in your own law school career. So when things are bad, just remember what happened to me and realize it's probably not that bad.

This was like the cardinal fucking rule of poker: 9/10 people do not give a shit about your bad beats. And the 10th likes to see you suffer. In law school it's definitely close 5-4 in terms of see you suffer/do not give a shitmerc280 wrote:It's at times like these that I realize how alone I am. makes me think I should have started playing poker years ago. Might have helped me fare better in law school.

Here I'll Try . . .
Last December
Took a final.
Got phone call during final, ignored.
Checked voicemail after final. My grandmother, who more or less raised me, had a massive stroke.
Drove three hours to back home.
Spent the next four days watching her die.
