ITT: how you improved dramatically from first semester

Post by TheFutureLawyer » Fri Jan 27, 2012 6:55 pm

So, grades came in and, as expected, I did really bad. I know both some of the general and specific reasons why I did so bad, and am making sure to not make the same mistakes.

Anyone who did really bad and made dramatic improvements want to share their story?

This thread turned into a decent discussion about various study methods and exam techniques.

There was no magic. I studied more and worked harder.

Not being willing to read six pages may have contributed to your problem in the first place.

Im around median after first semester without reading or taking any notes. I played games in class, every class. The first time I got cold called, I was playing Angry Birds and laughed out loud.

If I start acting like a student, do you think I could improve?

Same boat, I didnt really study at all semester except for cramming for 2 days before the exams. I figure if I start memorizing shit for exams now theres no way I dont do better than last semester which was a joke, in retrospect (in terms of how I approached it, I failed but still ended up median)

I don't know. Most of class time is absolutely worthless.

Go talk to your profs about your exams, even the ones you did well on. Despite the wisdom I sometimes see on these boards, I find LS exams to be very dependant on the prof and not objectively capable of being perfected outside the context of their specific class. If you have profs willing to go over what you did wrong and did right on their specific subject, you can perhaps translate that into general issues that you can focus on during your next semester.

Who is bragging, and dont you usually have to have something to brag about (aka not median) ? I royally fucked up my time management and study schedule for exams last semester, which was incredibly dumb. Do you want me to lie and say I studied a lot ?? Go get laid or something.

Angry Birds is bad new bears. It can be highly addictive. Those crazy Finns did a good job creating that online computer game.

Some people can get away without doing shit in law school and still maintain 10%. You're not one of them. Neither am I. Few people are. Just work harder. There's nothing else to it. I came into 1L assuming the people around me were a lot smarter, so I put a hell of a lot of effort into my work. I owe my success to the fact that I didn't succumb to the "I'm smarter than most people in my class" syndrome.
