Typical GPA of #1 in class

Post by Mce252 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 5:34 pm

Does the highest ranked person in a class typically have a 4.0 or above?

Just curious if there is often someone who manages all A's and A+'s. I guess it's hard to say unless you've done it.

Pretty sure there is a guy at my school is somewhere around a 3.9 on 4.0 scale.

It varies by year to year, but it's not uncommon at UVA for #1 to be >4.0.

About ten years ago the #1 student had four A+s and four As at the end of the year, and now teaches at UVA.

My 1L year at UVa there was a guy with a 3.95 GPA who was NOT the #1 student. So it'd have to be pretty close to 4.0 I'm guessing.

Chick in my section last year ended with a 4.2. I told her to gtfo and go cure cancer.

edit for relevance: she wasn't #1, and my brain esploded

General rule is that the higher up the rankings you go, the more grade inflation there is. So at tippy-top schools, you have to be much closer to a 4.0. At some lower ranked schools, they have medians at 2.7, so getting a 4.0 becomes (statistically) more difficult.

At my school, we don't have A+. So in the land of perfect, 4.0.

Wow -- 4.2 and not first is pretty crazy. What kind of curve is that?
3.15 - I asked if she was first and she said no, but perhaps she was being modest. Either that or #1 and #2 can form a coalition of cancer curers.

Yeah... I think the highest at my T2 is somewhere in the 3.8 area. No one has had a 4.0 in the last four years.
