Re: 1Ls: Likes/Dislikes about law school
I dislike the curve and the economy combination. I think if everyone was guaranteed some kind of job at the end it would mellow a lot of people out. I feel like the people who desperately want vault could sort of just be competitive on their own and the rest of us could not. But as it stands we kind of all have to be a little more competitive than I'd like.
I also wish there were smaller professor led discussion sections outside of the large classes.
Overall I think I like it but its been two weeks so maybe I just forgot haha

What is a striver and how does it differ from a gunner?

I thought a gunner was someone who raised their hand often in class, while a striver is someone who brags on facebook about getting kicked out of the library at closing time.Ludovico Technique wrote:What is a striver and how does it differ from a gunner?

Re: 1Ls: Likes/Dislikes about law school
When I think of gunner I think of the more traditional classroom gunner - hand goes up every 1-2 mins, usually tangentially related, stupid hypos, stupid jokes, bombards prof after class, etc.Ludovico Technique wrote:What is a striver and how does it differ from a gunner?
Striver is more just someone that goes overboard generally, though perhaps not in class. Especially the ones that take the competitiveness too seriously - ie refusing to help out a classmate with a question (encountered several of those), 10 colored highlights and book tabs in even a basic research class, taking notes during stupid school presentations, recording every lecture, etc.
It's a fine distinction, but I believe it's there.

Ah ok. I just lump both of those things in with gunner so I only have to hate one group. But I see your point.

The curve. Always the curve.

Despite the dislikes outnumbering the likes, I do actually like law school. I just get perpetually annoyed whenever I hear a story of someone who says "Yeah, I wasn't really thinking of being a lawyer, but someone suggested law school, so I figured 'why not'?" That and coming from a science and engineering undergrad school and all of my friends being science folks, it's incredibly annoying being surrounded by slews of pretentious English majors who 'surprisingly' couldn't find work after UG.

material not as interesting, but also not as hard, as I thought, so...neutral?
Dislikes:
cryptic feedback in LRW

the contingent of douchecanoes/cliques
class size
how, when the semester heats up, it feels very insular and you're driven to monomania (though applies to grad/professional school in general I guess)
useless casebooks (i.e. all of them)
Socratic Method (not because I'm afraid of being called on, but because I think it's massively overrated, especially in a gigantic class)
the curve and your entire grade being based on a 3 hour essay exam
economy
friday afternoon classes
