Did poorly in a one credit class... How bad is it?

Post by quixotical » Thu Dec 22, 2011 12:54 am

I'm a 1L and this semester I did something that normally only happens to people in nightmares: I slept through my alarm and missed a Legal Research quiz worth 10% of my grade. The quiz was a five minute MC quiz given at the beginning of class, and I showed up halfway through class and the prof wouldn't let me take it. I just got my research grade back and it's a B-. It's a 1 credit class at my school (legal writing is 2 credits). So far the only other grade I have received back is an A- in torts. I have no idea how I did on my other exams, and I expect to get an A-/B+ in legal writing based on my first memo and class participation. Assuming I don't get anything below a B in my substantive classes, how bad will it look that I got a B- in legal research? Am I totally screwed? I'm totally freaking out and beating myself up for messing up so majorly :(

Don't sweat it. It's too late anyway. And only 1 credit.

If your looking for validation- you're professor is a jerk.

Also, no use stressing. It's in the past, can't change it. Just learn from your mistake and see how it all shakes out.

I did some quick math. Looks like this is approx. as bad as a B- in a 1 credit course 1L year. Hope that helps!

PSA: They call it GPA because they take all of the grades you receive, and then here's where they get clever on you - they average them.

This. Plus, I wanted to know how employers will look at a poor grade in legal research (if it will really hurt or if above average grades in my other classes will make up for it).

You might have some splainin to do, maybe. If that. I don't think it'll hurt you more than just being a lower grade.

i don't think it matters. I didn't do much better but i didn't put a whole lot of effort into it because, well, its one credit and i wanted to put my effort into the substantive classes. However, i'm not sure how that worked out. Be happy with the A-.

It's weird that some schools separate out writing and research.

Anyway, rock your other classes and you'll be fine. At worst, has a decent explanation for why it didn't go so well.

I really despised that class and those damn assessments. And I'm definitely happy with an A- in torts-- if I can do as well in my other classes I'll feel a lot better about this one slip-up.

I'm guessing "I slept through my alarm" doesn't count as a decent explanation, lol.

Make something up. The flu, whatever. No one will care that much. And if you make Law Review or a journal, they really won't care.
