help with preregistration at CLS

Post by somewhatwayward » Thu Nov 17, 2011 9:55 pm

i am a 2L at CLS, and i botched up my preregistration pretty badly for the fall semester, so i was hoping other CLSers might have some insight...

is john coffee's corporations class going to be a class that fills if i don't put it first? what about advanced legal research or katz's commercial transactions?

is advanced legal research even a useful class to take (i feel like my legal research skills suck...), or should i just plan to learn on the job?

would taking corporations and commercial transactions simultaneously be overload for someone without a business/economics/finance background?

There are three corporations sections next semester, you should be able to get into one (jackson is good and i don't know who K.Judge is, I think she's new). Advanced legal research is supposed to be good, but it's not easy to get into - might no to be possible as a 2L, and I definitely wouldn't waste a number 1 or 2 slot on it.

Generally, I think that taking classes that overlap in substance is a good idea, but in any case FSA is a good class to take to learn a lot of that if you don't have a finance/business background and you can take it P/F - and it shouldn't very hard to get in.

Basically just put your #2 primary choice as your #1 alternate, #3 primary as #2 alternate, etc. When they run the lottery, if your primary choice is full, you'll get a seat in your alternate (if there's room), every time they go through - I think one the registrar's memos explains it.

Looks like that course is the same as secured transactions, which is pretty useful, but it's not critical that you take it this year. I would say corporations of course, FSA, and get PR out of the way before 3L (either next semester or the summer class) - it's just not something you want hanging over your head next year.
