Someone in my 1L class already got a callback - WTF? Forum

I'm a 1L at a T30 school. One of my classmates, who is quiet and socially awkward, has apparently been way more successful than me at schmoozing lawyers at networking events. Now he's boasting that he got a CALLBACK.

How is that even possible when our first semester grades aren't out yet? Okay, he went to one of the best public universities for engineering (I can't remember if he did Chem E or EE) and got stellar grades, but he's SO AWKWARD. How has he been more successful than the rest of us at networking? I have been brooding over this all through class right now...it can only be his science background.

Also, the fact that he's boasting about it and being inconsiderate is grating on everyone's nerves. I haven't even started applying for 1L jobs yet because I'm focusing on acing my exams and then aggressively applying for work over winter break. I mean, good for him if he's qualified, but I just don't need to hear that right now.

Reassurances and/or similar stories are welcome. All that "I got a callback!" stuff just made me feel insecure, and I know a bunch of other people in my class felt the same way.

At a guess, relevant pre-lawschool work experience, good contacts.

I agree, but sarcasm is not necessarily easily detected when you're reading text, especially if it's a short sentence and seems to be written in a serious context. If this was face-to-face, or in a thread with a different topic/context, I would normally agree that being a girl and being sarcastically called a "bro" is not unnatural.

The catch-22, of course, is that nobody would ever know you were setting an example. If they did, you wouldn't be setting one.

There were only a couple of people at my school that bragged about it. The most common way to find out at our school was people who knew they were up for the same job asking each other to see if the firm had made a decision. Then the information disseminated throughout the class. There were only one or two people that actually bragged about it. Most people didn't bring it up unless they were asked.

Because it is a zero sum game and they shouldn't talk about it out of respect to the people that aren't getting jobs and suddenly realize they are taking out a bunch of loans they might pay back. You can be happy for people, but talking about it can be insensitive because you don't really know how other people are doing.

It's not that people aren't happy for each other, it's just that it simultaneously makes people without jobs feel like shit.

Eh, maybe it's because I'm older and have a little more life experience. I recognize I'm not entitled to anything and if they get over me they were better. If I end up without...it was meant to be. I understand it could make people feel bad...so I didn't do. It just seemed like people were a little too touchy. To me, getting a callback isn't as big of a deal... I do get it more with OCI...journals though was really stupid. Especially since the masthead is public.

Litigation would be the crappiest job on earth if no bragging was involved. Why does a fighter pilot paint a swastikas on the side of his jet every time he shoots down a motherless fuck? Bragging and being happy for classmates are not mutually exclusive.
