Bummer. I wouldn't mind Tampa or Orlando if I strike out on south Florida, although, given that I have actual connections there (see: public sector), if that happens I'll probably be running a bar in mexico at that point.Mickey Quicknumbers wrote: I'm honestly bewildered as to what jobs anyone graduating from cooley tampa could possibly get except ones that are entirely dependent on nepotism. Traffic tickets. Intern/work for a traffic ticket lawyer for a year and open up your own shop.Mickey Quicknumbers wrote:I'm honestly bewildered as to what jobs anyone graduating from cooley tampa could possibly get except ones that are entirely dependent on nepotism. Very hard and unrealistic as possible, but it's the only way I see somebody making something decent out of it.
Other than that... FIU does have a pretty huge engineering college in comparison to the rest of the school (Social Science is the biggest dept.) - so for somebody who needs to become a patent lawyer or something of the sort midcareer as a rubberstamp, 30k isn't too shabby.
Personally, I think that's why the school exists - midcareer. Hell, some of our academics are going there because it's so cheap.

Ha, I was referring to Cooley. FIU, while not exactly legit, is still several tiers of respectability above half the schools in Florida.ResolutePear wrote:Traffic tickets. Intern/work for a traffic ticket lawyer for a year and open up your own shop.

From what I heard, some Miami firms prefer to hire locally (read: small law) for whatever reasons - mostly being that you need to be Hispanic or Haitian. I talked with a Vandy grad about this who now works in DC - apparently Miami is a hard spot for outsiders to break into.Mickey Quicknumbers wrote:tbf you fit into one of the aforementioned categories, so let's not go signing any leases in spanish yet.FeelTheHeat wrote:Bummer. Obviously, this won't bar T-14's, UF, and FSU grads. So, tough luck there FIU.

This is so ridiculous that words escape me. Any class of 14 guys interested in starting a law school if we don't get jobs? It appears that if we can put fog on a piece of glass we meet the standard to run a law school.

I don't think they make any claims of grandeur outside of "HEY LOOK, OUR GRADS HAVE A SUPER HIGH BAR PASSAGE RATE!!," so I don't hate on them too much. Personally, I think their construction of a law school had to do more closely with the fact that they also wanted a med school(which they got shortly after, IIRC) - or something along those lines as I was able to deduce from some staff who have been there forever. Of course, I take it with a grain of salt - but I am pretty proud that they're like a Walmart of city universities.Mickey Quicknumbers wrote:Ha, I was referring to Cooley. This is a joke.

Yes. Let the AMA accredit a couple schools in a year and the profession will practically throw them out into the streets.Sandro wrote:This is a joke.

Lawyers just have no balls - the ABA ripped them out as required for entering a state bar.

Yeah, I mean between the price and the fact that they are the 2nd best school in the only "major" market in Florida, I think it would be fair to call them the worst school in Florida that doesn't deserve to be shut down.ResolutePear wrote:I don't think they make any claims of grandeur outside of "HEY LOOK, OUR GRADS HAVE A SUPER HIGH BAR PASSAGE RATE!!," so I don't hate on them too much. Yup. Keep em alive along with the four above it and that should satisfy the needs of the state plenty.

I can agree with this. Their library is actually piggybacked with another county-owned library to meet the ABA requirement - that is really the only thing I can really hate on them for as a UG-student that's not a prospect for their law school.Mickey Quicknumbers wrote:Yeah, I mean between the price and the fact that they are the 2nd best school in the only "major" market in Florida, I think it would be fair to call them the worst school in Florida that doesn't deserve to be shut down.ResolutePear wrote:I don't think they make any claims of grandeur outside of "HEY LOOK, OUR GRADS HAVE A SUPER HIGH BAR PASSAGE RATE!!," so I don't hate on them too much. I wouldn't worry about it if you're going to a respectable school - moreso if you're going to a T-14.Sandro wrote:Alright, i'm actually a lot more upset at this after I read they will be churning out grads just one year behind me in 2015 in a market I will be applying to.

FIU has a projected yearly cost of attendance of $53,000 for out of state students.ResolutePear wrote:I guess I don't understand supply and demand.NotMyRealName09 wrote:Yeah, but they both attract minimally qualified individuals from across the country. Both unranked(Well, FIU's now ranked 132. lulz), one costs 200k while the other costs 25k.
Hm, stiff competition right there.
Both schools have about equal credentials(unranked), but Cooley is a private institution(6-figure debt) vs. FIU which is a public institution(~30k, realistically. Minus any non-stipulated scholarships, of course.) This is a very tough position for a student accepted to both schools to decide on.
--LinkRemoved--
Cooley projected yearly cost of attendance is currently around $49,000.

In-state students do save significant money at FIU.

Cooley is 34k vs FIU's 28k OOS.
Instate, Cooley's 34k while FIU is 15k.
Don't know about Cooley, but FIU has some pretty attractive scholarships to lower that cost even further.
