Do I need to buy a scanner for law school?

Post by refusetolose » Wed Jul 20, 2011 3:37 pm

Or will it collect dust and never be used?

It will collect dust. There is no need to buy a scanner, if you should ever need one-which is doubtful- the school will have some.

Idk if you really need a scanner but it's useful for backing up documents elecontrically and for example, if you send a cover letter for a job, you can print, sign, and then can and send it via email.

There are some really good all-in-ones for less than 200. I would get a Canon if you decided to get one. Look on Amazon.

There is no need to sign a cover letter.

Only times I've used a scanner in my two years so far has been to scan my unofficial transcript to attach to email for job apps, and to copy another student's notes in a no-laptop class when I've missed class. I wouldn't worry about it too much since your school will likely have one.

Yeah I'm not even planning on getting a printer. All that shit can be done at the library. I didn't even have word during UG. When I needed to, I'd just switch the format at the library (though I am planning on getting word and one note for $80 for law school).

What is the mass mailing for- Isn't everything usually done at OCI?

I use my scanner maybe once every month or two, so it's at least somewhat useful. But you should be able to scan at the law school, so I don't think it's worth buying a new one. If you see someone selling theirs for cheap (I bought mine for $30) you might consider getting it.

If you're smart, no.

edit: Actually, hell no. Probably half of the students at T13 schools, give or take, won't get jobs from OCI.

Yea it's free at Duke as long as you're a student. After graduation you just pay $10 for the CD

I didn't even have a printer my 1L year and I got along just fine. I printed everything at the library. The only time it was a problem was on mornings when memos were due and everyone was trying to print them off at the same time and the printers run out of paper etc. There was never one time that I wished I had a scanner, though.

Yeah, definitely. Call your admissions office to make sure the law building is beeper friendly though, you know, bank of phones...

I used a scanner twice for law school related work during my 1L year. In both cases I was scanning a handout on to my computer. A scanner is optional in law school. Nothing wrong with having one, but not worth the expense to buy one.

Check before you buy. A lot of schools will sell Microsoft Home and Student to you for about $20 in the bookstore with an ID.
