Too many people know about TLS
So I am pretty sure that the majority of my class reads TLS, going by what some 2Ls and 3Ls have told me and from what a couple of classmates I've met have said. I'm a little deflated, I totally thought TLS was a secret weapon and nobody else was reading Getting to Maybe or Arrow's advice for 1L success, etc. But seriously, if most of the class reads TLS, what edge does it give you?
I'd like to find out from rising 2Ls and incoming 1Ls - did you find that your classmates were using the same methods and supplements as you were using? Did you find that the advice on TLS didn't get you as high a grade as you wanted, because everyone else was following the same advice?
I guess...I dunno, it just makes the competition for good grades that much more difficult, because you're essentially back to square one and nobody has a real edge over anyone else. This site is awesome and I'm still going to use it, but how did people overcome this problem?
I probably shouldn't have asked that question here!

Lol, and you're going to law school? That attitude won't get you anywhere in one of the most competitive academic environments you could choose. Everyone's gunning for number one, don't think there's some magic pill you can take to get ahead of the game. . .

Even people who don't read TLS will know about supplements and Getting to Maybe. Your professors might even tell you about them.

Re: Too many people know about TLS
I think this post just disqualified you from the super-elite secret thread we started to share the *real* performance-enhancing secrets.
Sorry, j/k. I was actually surprised by the number of people at certain ASW's who didn't read/hadn't heard of TLS, and the number who just used it for rankings info.
In any case, just having the info doesn't mean you're getting top of the class. There are guides on here that insist on 12 hour days six days a week. How many people actually do it? I think your attitude about this is wrong--TLS has a lot of information that is freely accessible and can help guide you, but viewing it as the secret sauce that will get you "ahead" of others in your class just seems really silly to me.

I don't think I heard this website come up once all year at my T10.

Lol, secret sauce. No really, it's definitely an amazing site and while I wasn't looking to lean on TLS for everything, it definitely made a world of a difference in my application process and I figured it would make a difference in my 1L year. Everyone's looking for an edge, it's just that nobody will admit it. I can say these things because of the anonymity of TLS, but I'd be scorned if I said it in public - and I'd probably make fun of anyone else who said it in public too.
The thing is that TLS seems to be something nobody wants to talk about because it's so useful. One of my friends sent some advice about LSAT prep that was pretty much taken from Pithypike's guide, and later her 1L study tips were taken from bits and pieces written on TLS - she didn't give me everything, but she wrote little tidbits of advice from here. When I asked her if she got that stuff from TLS, she sort of paused, sheepishly admitted it and changed the subject. It was like she wanted to help me, but she didn't want to give away everything.

Much more likely she didn't want to admit to being a regular user of a law school message board.Peg wrote:Lol, secret sauce. I've told all my LSAT students to check out TLS. I hope they make informed decisions about their futures.

Most people might go in with the intention to use the advice but will be mentally too weak to actually follow through. Everyone in your class is going to be relatively smart. The difference between the ones at the top and everyone else is discipline and finding ways to study in the most effective way.bjsesq wrote:I should hope not.Kilpatrick wrote:Even if everyone knows about TLS, not everyone actually uses the advice

People I barely knew at my school were congratulating me on my grades (which I posted on TLS, but didn't discuss with anyone at school). It was really awkward, and odd to know that people knew who I was.

I'm referring strictly to the study threads here, but my problem with them is they are what worked FOR THAT PERSON, and do not necessarily work for everyone. Finding an effective means of studying is a personal thing. Tying myself to xeoh's method would have been disastrous for me on an academic and personal level.ran12 wrote:Most people might go in with the intention to use the advice but will be mentally too weak to actually follow through. If I have one piece of advice, it is that you have to trust your judgment about what will and won't work for you. Like this guy said.bjsesq wrote:I'm referring strictly to the study threads here, but my problem with them is they are what worked FOR THAT PERSON, and do not necessarily work for everyone. Not all the information on this site is the same either. A tiny minority are gunning PLSII style but most people on these boards are just regular law students who want to do well. It's much harder actually following Arrow's advice than it is to read his article.
It should also be mentioned that almost no one is willing to admit if they did poorly. Only the people in the top ~15% of their class actually say their rank (ex: transfer boards.) Everyone else, in particular the most frequent/recognizable posters, don't tell whether the succeeded or failed. This means it's almost impossible to know if their advice, like don't prep over the summer, is good or really bad.

As for people following TLS's advice, there are actual threads for people attending TTTs. That should be proof enough reading TLS != listening to TLS.
