What should I do 0L summer?
I've worked for the last 5 years either part time w/ school or full-time and thought it'd be fun to take 2-3 months off before law school. I played video games for a week and honestly can't play another hour of video games or watch another movie.
I'm traveling in July. I'm saving the rest of my $$ for LS.
Gun hard w/ GTM, LEEWS, E&E's? I won't burn out because I'm doing absolutely nothing all day.
Find a temp. 1 month job?
Do nothing? What do people do to "relax" before 1L?

Work, read for pleasure, and just enjoy the fucking summer. Also read GTM if you want. Don't be one of those tools who does a bunch of useless substantive prep.
Edit: So basically, my answer is none of the above.

If you want to do something that may help, you can use/make connections to talk with attorneys in your area and elsewhere. That way your familiar when you come applying for a 1L SA.

Go to home depot and find some work hanging dry wall or something. You'll make 10 bucks an hour under the table. Save the money for drinking money in law school.

Re: What should I do 0L summer?
Personally, I will be reading GTM (already about half way through), doing LEEWS, studying the "how to do well" threads on TLS, and skipping E&E's or anything substantial.bartleby wrote:I've worked for the last 5 years either part time w/ school or full-time and thought it'd be fun to take 2-3 months off before law school. For me, every time I pick up GTM and read a few pages I get really excited about law school, so I think that momentum is going to be as valuable as anything I actually learn doing the prep. You said you won't burn out, which makes me think you have an inclination to want to do 0L prep. That's where I sit too, and I'm going for it.
It's a tough issue. Have you seen the TLS collected wisdom?

Talon says not to do 0L prep, Arrow is less clear. I'm going with Arrow's bolded advice here:
"I read every word in every book listed above from beginning to end. I read Law School Confidential first, then Planet Law School, then did 3 E&E’s (started with the Glannons Torts/Civ Pro, which were the best of the series), then read Getting to Maybe, then another 3 E&E’s, followed by Delaneys, and finally LEEWS right before school started.
If you choose not to do all this prep (and I assume many will not), I would recommend LEEWS, Getting to Maybe, and Delaney's (in that order of importance). The reading order I recommend is GTM first (it is a great intro), then Delaney's, then LEEWS all about a week or two before law school starts."
It makes sense to me, since this is the "how to take an exam" material that won't be covered in law school, whereas we will learn the law once we're there, and studying in advance runs the risk of studying material that won't be expected/good to know for our courses.
Good luck!

Re: What should I do 0L summer?
yep, I was on TLS for probably four hours a day back at work so I've read everything. the guy with batman in his avatar says to do prep. also, it is a good point that people who say don't prep didn't prep.
funny you should mention home depot because i was thinking about taking up woodworking or landscaping just out of boredom. but i'm the type of person to drop a bunch money on a new hobby and never really finish/begin.
GTM, Delaney's (not sure what this is, will look into it), LEEWS sounds good though.

NOTHING AT ALL. ENJOY YOURSELF.
Trust me, once you start law school you will probably never stop working until you get rich/retire/die. And honestly, it will probably become even more challenging once you finish law school and start practicing.

This is my first summer off in like 8 years. I am going to be reading GTM (again), LSC, and the E&Es for my first semester classes. Not full on gunning, but trying to do some work to prepare.

Do you actually think you're going to remember that stuff when finals arrive? 1L year, I would do your work throughout the semester, but save the real gunning for the last 2 months of the semester.joncrooshal wrote:This is my first summer off in like 8 years. Re: What should I do 0L summer?
I am honestly reading a ton.
I love to read for pleasure and I figured this summer would be the best time to get a ton of it done. I am reading biographies on some of my favorite political, historical, and business figures. I am also reading a couple of classics I never got assigned to read in school.
(I am also doing substantial 0L prep that I will not talk about here)

Get a job. Make money. Drink beer. Don't do law school stuff like reading the Bluebook or something.

Idk if they were trolling, but there was one thread where a few posters actually recommended OLs to get familiar with the bluebook before 1Lromothesavior wrote:Get a job. Make money. Drink beer. Don't do law school stuff like reading the Bluebook or something.

Play golf, drink, read, and if you can swing it, have sex with all those girls in your hometown who you'll never see again.

I just want to get a handle on what I am getting myself into. There's no harm in reading the things. I live by the beach -- I'll likely be reading them on the beach with my feet in the water.cornellbeez wrote:Do you actually think you're going to remember that stuff when finals arrive? 1L year, I would do your work throughout the semester, but save the real gunning for the last 2 months of the semester.joncrooshal wrote:This is my first summer off in like 8 years. Re: What should I do 0L summer?
I prepped pretty hard 0L summer so I can tell you this from experience: Do NOT waste your time. It doesn't help you do better in law school. And aside from that, it can serve no other purpose. People like to say "oh the people who say not to do 0L prep are the people who didn't do it themselves and just wanna justify the decision". Well o did it and it didn't help at all. And btw, I did very well first year. The prep had nothing to do with it. You are going to have to trust me on that. You start yourself down a bad path with the 0L prep stuff while the actual smart people are out getting a leg up on you. Don't waste a golden opportunity with pointless prep books. Law school is quite a counterintuitive journey. The impulsive and reactionary things are usually the red flags. Reaching for 0L prep books is the epitome of reactionary moves that push aside the countetintuitive thought process you must apply in law school to get a leg up.
Im not saying that I was above falling victim to the reactionary and reflexive things. Its what we call losing the forest for the trees. But im telling you this so that you don't fall into the same traps along the way.

That's the other thing I need to do. My resume is really shitty, so I need to completely re-tool it and do a basic cover letter or so.Taffybear2 wrote:update your resume and cover letters so that you won't have to worry about them to much when finals come around
