never heard of this thing. Anyone know what it is or if there is any point in joining? Or is it just spam?

No point in joining, it's pretty much a scam I think. You pay money for them to list you in their thing or something.

Join it. It's a GPA-based invitation (at least where I attended school). A lesser lesser version of Phi Beta Kappa.

Edit: join it if you don't have any other honors societies on your resume.

It's a waste of whatever it costs to join (I remember it being around $80 in UG). If you have room on your resume that you need this on it, then join some activities. It'd be a more fulfilling addition.

Edit to say: At my UG, the notice said I got it as a result of being in the top 15% of my class. Which would've been cool, except I was barely in the top half, never mind the top 15%. It made me think that they were desperate to get members and increase their revenues through fees.

Other than showing up on a transcript and an utterly-useless-except-for-framing certificate, I cannot say I gained anything from GK in the past fifteen years (I got an invite a year or so after I returned to school in the mid-90's)...oh and an occasional email from them. They have not cost me a dime though...but I guess things could have changed as some of their sponsoring entities folded.

I was rather surprised to get the invite until I learned that it was based on the hours completed in residence and did not include the transfer hours.

I disagree..sorta. Some law apps have a portion specifically for academic honors (Phi Beta Kappa, Dean's Lists). If you don't have any of those, at least you can list this one.

And you can always add a line to your Education section called Academic Honors. Unlike PBK, you don't have to maintain a GPA for Golden Key.

Don't bother, it's worthless. Same goes for NSCS.

Seems like a waste.. and my concern about joining is that some potential employer will look at my resume and scoff that I paid $80 to add this resume line.. especially since I already have LR and Deans List

Edit: ty for the responses

It's ok if you need for resume. I think I paid like $25 to join or something. I've since blocked their annoying e-mails.

I am a member of it. Never used any of their discounts: http://www.goldenkey.org/GKIHS/MemberBe ... Discounts/

It might help in car insurance if Geico is already the lowest insurer in your area. That alone may justify the membership cost.

I am also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. As part of the membership benefits, we get a free year of Bloomberg Business, which i really value. The renewal price is also lower than what i've seen anywhere on the net.
