2L Year: What activities are you doing or have been doing?
So. With 1L winding down, we're all looking at clubs, journals, and other stuff. What are your guys' plans?
I know some people who're trying out for Moot Court and looking at doing journal too.
Any advice by 2Ls and 3Ls are always credited.

The only credential that really matters is Law Review, or a secondary journal if you don't have LR. Otherwise, just do what you're interested in, or nothing at all.

Minimizing the amount of work you have to do while maximizing how good your resume looks.
It's a tough balance, but it can be achieved.

I'd be interested in hearing your story. I'm looking at a secondary journal and possibly even trial law association. I'm told managing my schedule would be tough.pasteurizedmilk wrote:Minimizing the amount of work you have to do while maximizing how good your resume looks.

anything you can possibly do where you can have a law related story helps... especially if it forces you to be in constant contact with attorneys.

Re: 2L Year: What activities are you doing or have been doing?
Well, I failed. I'm doing an internship (advertised as 15 hours/week) that's closer to 30 hours a week. I'm on a journal, and that's actually a lot less work than advertised, so that's kinda evening things out.zeth006 wrote:I'd be interested in hearing your story. Classes is where you can really cut corners. You should know how to prepare now, so it'll be easier and take less time.
As far as extracurrics - do a Journal. for sure. If you want to clerk, find a judicial internship. if you want to work for the guv't, try to find some kind of guv't internship in your desired field. that would be my advice at least. also if your school gives credit for interning it can end up being less work than a class....

I'd skip clubs and that stuff. I don't think employers really care, IME. Unless it provides opportunities to meet practicing attorneys that you would otherwise not meet......I'd skip it.

LS classes: minimum credits, maximize pass-fail classes
extra curriculars: NOTHING except 1 journal; no clubs - i mean ZERO, no federalist society, no human rights law club, none of that shit - especially no mock trial or moot court
journal: secondary with the best sounding title but i wont have to do ANY substantive work
GF: a chill one and we have a rule that we only have sleepovers Th-Sa when no class next morning
the one thing that takes up my time is gym and golf. going to get buff as fuk before SA so i can impress partners reping 225 NFL combine style (no joke, when i interviewed a bunch said they all work out at office before work). going to lower handi to about 10-15...i did high level sales before LS, i know where 100% of the deals get made.

Re: 2L Year: What activities are you doing or have been doing?
and yea 15 isnt great, i just want to be consistently around 10-15. plus its a huge improvement for me (i used to shoot like 120 no joke) - so im happy with it. problem is i learned all wrong from friends in HS...then played my shitty style for years. so it took a lot of lessons just to get the basics down (correctly).GATORTIM wrote:Agreed.dood wrote:im confident 99% of the people who claim they know how to golf cant break 100 on any 1/2 decent course.GATORTIM wrote:15+ handicap = deals getting done in the woods/lakes?dood wrote:going to lower handi to about 10-15...i did high level sales before LS, i know where 100% of the deals get made.

Your advice sounds solid. I'm keeping my club activities down to a minimum because frankly, my hiring attorneys didn't seem to give a shit that I was "actively involved" in this club or that. He was more so interested in my writing sample and my own personal goals short-term and long-term. In other words, he cut to the chase. I'm planning to go to events if I wanna chill with buddies for a couple of hours and listen to some war stories from attorneys who've been there done that.
Journal is definitely where the money seems to be. It'll be a nice way to make sure my writing skills are at least at par by 2L summer, though that may depend on whether my summer employer decides to keep me on board...

So the consensus is clubs and things like that are worthless. Obviously journal and grades are super important. And internships are good or not?

Clubs are meh. If you can get away with minimum work while being a board member, great. Do it.
Externships look great on your resume. Everyone knows what an externship is. If your grades are good and if you apply early, you can land a gig with some some high level court justice. 9th Circuit comes to mind as one example. If not, a superior court always looks pretty good too.
I've also heard of people interning with the city attorney's office.

All this aside...would participation on my school's trial team do me any good in terms of prepping me for litigation?

I would say my internship has been a very valuable experience. Clubs....pretty much a time sink.
I don't know about mock trial one way or the other. Never looked into it.
