In-house Legal Internship for major IB

Post by icouldbuyu » Mon Mar 28, 2011 2:21 pm

I'm currently a 0L interning with a major IB in NYC. I will be shooting for Big Law once I graduate from UVA. Obviously grades are key, but should I accept an offer to intern with the in-house legal department at my IB. My friend says its a waste of time, and that I should relax prior to commencing law school. I feel like the experience may be useful in attaining strong networks post graduation if I don't get Big Law. My boss is very well connected, and already told me that he can get me a gig with the SEC post-graduation, so I also have that option if big law does not work out. What should I do?

Take it. It pays right? Take it.

Not sure yet. If it doesn't pay, should I still take it?

If you can at least break even there or have the means to support yourself, then I'd say to take it for the networking value regardless of pay, especially if you don't have anything else to do. If it's not paying and you can't afford it, then maybe you should just listen to your friend and chill.

Most young associates I know, however, would kill to have any networking contact in house anywhere. The worst that happens is it becomes a summer in NYC the you remember for everything except "that stupid internship."

Thanks for the advice. I think thats what I'm gonna do since I can afford to not get paid if necessary. I figure if I'm top of my class at UVA, then the internship probably won't matter, but if I'm below median, then it will definitly be a useful asset.

I'm fairly sure major IB pay. I'd take it as long as you don't have to go into debt to live there.

I live in NYC, so I won't accumulate any extra debt.
