Appropriate to take class with partner at SA firm?

Post by Younger Abstention » Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:27 pm

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to take a class with an adjunct prof. who happens to be a partner at the biglaw firm (different office) I am summering at? The class deals with the area of law I want to go into, which also happens to be one of the main practice areas at this firm.

If the answer is yes, is it appropriate to tell the prof. that I will be summering at his firm?

Extremely inappropriate. I'm surprised the registrar would even let you do this.

What's the point of a firm partner being an adjunct professor if they can't use the semester as one extended interview?

That said, just bringing up the the SA thing without prompting would be pretty obnoxious.

Sounds like a conflict of interest imo.

But is it ok to take the class? I'm not trying to butter up the partner -- I just really want to take the subject.

I don't think it's inappropriate, since schools use blind grading. It would become inappropriate if you used the class as an opportunity to kiss partner ass, however. You should also be wary of accidentally making the guy hate you (perhaps by using the class as an opportunity to kiss partner ass).

I was completely joking, btw. Of course it is fine. And of course you should tell him; it would be weird if you did not tell him that you will be working at his firm. Just don't be a gunner suck up about it.

Sounds fine. Wouldn't be any different from taking a class from a prof that you work for as an RA. Only caveat, don't screw up the class.

not if you are a really annoying person, if you are normal it sounds appropriate

Imagine the career implications of getting a C in his class.
