say a class with close to 160 students vs. a class with around 50--which is better (curve-wise)?

take a super small class where there is no curve.

Ha! But I'd say small, provided it isn't something you mean to blow off. Fewer people makes it easier to get to know your professor, which makes it easier to ask that professor for a reference later.
