how early did/will you get there before orientation? Forum

Thinking a solid 6 days of setting up my apartment and toolin around town should be sufficient...

all I really need to begin is bed, chair, desk, kitchen shit

and I can survive

hopefully my brother or family can come later in the month and finish the job of setting up


any law students have any advice on how early to get there based on their experience?

The earlier, the better. The people I know who crash landed 24 hours before orientation were not happy with their choice. Obviously they lived; but still.

I'm getting there about 6 days early. Figured it would be nice to have a bed to sleep on before I had to start doing stuff.

edit: I should add that I'm staying at my UG, so, really furniture is the only thing I have to do. I already know the area, the school, and have many of my friends still around. If I moved to a new city, I think I would have gone a week or two earlier.

I'm scheduled to move in by August 1st, two weeks before orientation. I'm thinking of showing up just a week ahead of time. I wonder if that's excessively early. What are the pros/cons of arriving so far in advance?

For me, the main advantages of staying home an extra week are spending time with the family and saving money on food. I'm afraid I might miss out on the 0L bonding experience though. Good point about being charged for the rent either way.

I'm moving in 10 days before orientation. I kind of want to miss the whole big move-in day on August 1st because I know it will be kinda hectic, plus I get to spend a little more time with the family (and the free food, etc.).

Every school is different, I'm guessing 2-3 days is probably typical.

Our campus housing move-in date is two days before orientation, at the earliest. Boo.

3) Figure out transportation to and from school

I arrived at my school about a month before orientation. Of course, it helped that I only had to move 10 minutes away from where I was previously living to get there, but having lots of time to adjust, find a new gym, stock up my apartment, and get into a groove really left me in a positive mental space before law school got rolling. If anyone else can do the same, I'd highly recommend it.

I moved in 2-3 weeks before orientation (to NYC), and I'm very happy I did. The only con is that you have to pay rent and if you're leaving a job behind, you're missing out on that money. The pros are that you have time to set up your apartment (all of the little errands, especially when it's hot outside, are a lot more pleasant if you can spread them out over a week), meet other 1Ls who also moved early, and just familiarize yourself with the neighborhood.

I already made my move. Did it for in-state tuition though. It is really really boring though. However, I spend some days reading my EEs and Getting to Maybe, so maybe it is not too bad.

I'm moving in 5 days before orientation, but only 2 days before pre-orientation orientation. I have to pay rent at my old apartment through the end of august so I'd rather limit the amount my new apt is costing.

I will be moving in 12 days b4 orientation. then going on a trip, a 4.5 hour drive for a family reuion, then back 2 days before orientation. Wondering if its gonna be way too hectic when I already have reading assignments to do.

You'll be fine, as long as you don't procrastinate all your before-school errands. Keep in mind that your first crack at cases will take a long time -- especially if you're anything like the typical 1L -- you'll want to read each case for the first week about 5 times. Just make sure you set aside enough reading time.
