Does anyone know how long an undergraduate university would keep information on its former students? Specifically, I am wondering any disciplinary information in a file. It seems a little ridiculous if this information would be kept in the student file forever. Do students generally have to petition the school to remove or seal the information?
Also, does anyone know how long former employers keep a personnel file around?
Sometimes I feel like criminals have more second chances than others do because at least they can get records sealed or expunged. There does not seem to be a similar process or school or employment records. They just seem to follow for life!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here, but no criminals do not have more second chances. Whatever you did has no real impact on your future life. No one hires reformed child molesters.r973 wrote:Does anyone know how long an undergraduate university would keep information on its former students? Just ask your Dean's office. It may be gone from your record by now, it may not. I highly doubt you can "petition them": they usually have a protocol.
And no, you're much better off than a criminal. "Expunged" criminal acts are still in a database, whereas once your school removes something from your record, there is no paper trail. Not uh, suggesting that dishonesty is ever acceptable...

Wrong forum, but anyway, UG's keep your disciplinary record for as long as they keep your grades. If you were actually "written up," then the school has that info and will send it to employers or LS's if you have agreed to have that information released. You can contact your UG and ask for a copy of what they have on file and they'll tell you.
Employers keeping records varies highly. Most will keep some form of paper trail, if only for legal purposes, but small employers might not. You need to check with your employer and hope that they give you an honest answer.
And no, criminals don't get second chances. Records are sealed or expunged only under very specific conditions, usually because the person committed the crime as a minor. As an adult, if you have a record it stays with you forever. Even traffic tickets.
Really, you need to get all your f*ing up done before you turn 18. After that it's no fun to be bad.
