Job offer, work during 1L?
Hello,
I am starting my 1L in about a month. I had previously applied for a job. It looks like I am going to get it. They were looking for someone full time, but are willing to work with my schedule. I am concerned that they will over schedule me if I work their. I currently could use the money a lot. I had to relocate quite far for law school and am short money right now. Should I:
1. Take the job and be possibly very busy my 1L.
2. Tell them I want the job bu only under the condition of weekends only, or something similar.
3. Pass on the job, be broke, and study more.
Not sure if it matters but, I personally, have always worked during school. I worked 35hrs a week in high school, and worked 40hrs a week at two part time jobs during all of my undergrad. Thoughts?

I worked during 1L but at 10hrs/wk at most. I wouldn't really recommend more. Some people may say that they did and succeeded. But the fact of the matter is 1L grades are too important to risk it.

you can only work 20hrs max in law school. Save the hassle and dont work, study instead.
If you really need the money, you could work for the month then quit. Its not professional at all, but if its a joke job ( retail, waiting, etc) there are other places to apply for next summer

I think per ABA rules you are not supposed to have a job your 1L year, and only limited work in 2L/3L. That being said, I doubt they would actually do anything about it. But you will be very busy 1L and should consider whether those hours would be worth it, potentially at the expense of your grades.

One month from now, you will be glad you made this decision.eberl032 wrote:Thanks everyone. I turned down the job. Looks like I will study 20 more hours a week

Yes, you will. Law school is not undergrad. It's something completely different. I asked my admissions officer whether I could work during my first year. Her response? "Only if you don't want to come back for your second year." She was right. I quit my job, and I have NO regrets whatsoever.Jarndyce wrote:One month from now, you will be glad you made this decision.eberl032 wrote:Thanks everyone. I turned down the job. I agree with the above statements. 1L grades are very important for job prospects after your first year. In fact, your GPA will determine whether you can even interview at certain firms. You should just focus on your studies for now.LoriBelle wrote:Yes, you will. Law school is not undergrad. It's something completely different.
