Spending 6X your future annual salary on your first wedding seems totally reasonable to me.
well, to be fair, her hypothetical sugar daddy is footing the bill.

And yet it seems like he will have very little input in terms of how that money is spent?

I never said who was paying for it. And Waterman, what makes you think I'm spending 6x my future annual salary?

How do you BP people decide which thread to derail? You always come in droves. Is there a method to the madness?

NYG, TLS's resident working mom, should really weigh in.

This is ridiculous FUD. If my kid was really brilliant, I wouldn't have to pay for their college. And who the hell has a $200,000 wedding? The average American wedding supposedly costs on the order of $28,000.
This is the kind of failed logic that has saddled myself and my parents with much debt (not saying I'm "brilliant", but when you're 17 you want to go to the best school you can, not whichever crappy school has offered you a full ride, housing and stipend)

1) It was a joke.

2) On that note though, if your kid has some starry-eyed notion of an Ivy League law school, she shouldn't go to the best college she should get into. She should go to the cheapest one where she can get a 4.0.

Terrible twos: Live in full time Nanny
Teenage years: Boarding school.

when i was 17 i wanted that too. then i took a gap year and was like, wait, UIowa in-state tuition? sign me up. there isn't nearly discussion about the true value of expensive-but-elite UGs.

Exactly. I don't consider myself brilliant by any stretch, but I went to my local state school on a full ride. I loved it and I got a great education. Even if I hadn't received any scholarship money, in-state tuition would have been something like $8k/yr.

What saddles parents with crippling debt is entitled little snowflakes who barely squeak into HYP and then want their parents to foot the $60k/yr, then major in Theology or some crap, pull a 2.5 and wonder why they don't graduate with a job. If my kid were truly brilliant, I would tell them to go to a middle-of-the-road school and be a big fish in a little pond.

Luckily the guy I am with actually likes the prospect of staying home. He jokes that he will raise the kids and play world of warcraft. If that does happen, I will jealous of him.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
