Went Over Word Limit
A friend who went over the word limit on an exam by a few hundred words. Said friend was bummed. Has this happened to you or anyone you know? What was the consequence?

Good god that is harsh. Reduce the score by half? I hope badlydrawn's friend went over by like 200 words on a 5,000 word essay...disco_barred wrote:I am the most useful poster in the history of the entire fucking internet:

I actually wish we had word limits, though. I'm far from the fastest typist in my class (about four pages per hour, factoring in planning time), so I don't have the luxury of wasting half a second for anything. Every word has got to matter. In a way I'm jealous, because I don't know that I could exceed word count, unless it was a take home exam or something...

Re: Went Over Word Limit
I have never dealt with this issue as my ttt school generally gives racehorse exams, but still, its hard to feel sorry for someone who doesn't read the instructions, especially when its a bitch for everyone else.
Personal aside - My section was allowed one side of one 3x5 card for our con law final essay section (not MC sadly), and while it was relatively unnecessary because you tend to memorize everything you write in a size that can fit on a grain of rice, a girl showed up with a HUGE flashcard (twice the size). Do I feel bad if she gets caught? Not really. I had to deal with the absurd (to follow the question in that article, "draconian") limitations the professor imposed, and the fact that she has more factual information available (case names etc) could affect the curve just like writing beyond the word limit obviously would. Now I didn't out her, but its not like this is a victimless crime. Everyone else gets fucked if one person is allowed to spend 500 words describing an issue where everyone else gets 250.

Oh, thats not so bad, hope those last 300 words weren't anything important. Also, how the hell do you get a 2,300 word limit. Seems pretty arbitrary, I feel slightly sorry for your friend as that is a weird number to remember.badlydrawn wrote:appx. 300 on 2300.OperaSoprano wrote: I hope badlydrawn's friend went over by like 200 words on a 5,000 word essay...

It's not good, but your friend probably won't fail. I wouldn't show him/her that link, though. I think something like that would psych me out.badlydrawn wrote:approx. 300 on 2300.OperaSoprano wrote: I hope badlydrawn's friend went over by like 200 words on a 5,000 word essay...

I went over the word limit and still got accepted by 2 schools, although most of the apps only had page limits which are easier to play with using condensed font, margins, etc.

Re: Went Over Word Limit
We had two essays at the end of our property exam. The instructions said we "should" limit our answers to 2,000 characters and nothing else regarding character limits. I had 2,200-2,500 characters for each because I was rushed for time and forgot to be mindful of the character count. I'll let everyone know how my grade turns out.

Re: Went Over Word Limit
It likely depends a lot on the professor and whether others also went over.
One of my professors is known for having very restrictive word limits and then not really enforcing them because almost everyone goes over. I went over by more than 500 words and actually did well, so it's not as if you will always get a low grade for going over.

Re: Went Over Word Limit
With any tests I've had so far with word, page, or line limits, the professor has been very explicit about his policy, ranging from not reading any word/line beyond the limit or if they allow a little bit of leeway.

I'm sure most Profs are willing to finish the sentence, even if its a few words over. Beyond that, its all at the professors discretion.
Good luck though man.

Dang. We use ExamSoft, and it just stops when you reach a question's character limit.

Yeah, so do we, although we had word limits instead of character the other day and it didn't stop and I had to continuously go to the word counter thing.macattaq wrote:Dang. We use ExamSoft, and it just stops when you reach a question's character limit.
