I think you need to break down the poll more. 25-50 is a fairly large gap.

I'm a little skeptical of the 1-5% numbers.

Wow.. even though you can't count on this poll being accurate, I'm surprised just how many high achievers we have here. I guess it shows, in part, how great of a resource this website is, as well as the caliber of students that are drawn to this website.

I call baloney on the 1-5%. Yes, there are smart people here. But smart people generally end up going to top schools. Where there, amazingly, are other smart people. I doubt that many are in the top 5%.

It's ok man. Statistically, 95% of us have to be in the bottom 95%. It could be argued that we're still relevant, irrespective of our rank.sky7 wrote:I call baloney on the 1-5%. Why would someone lie on an anonymous poll?

I believe it. People who do well are likely to be attracted to the site and to stay on the law student's forum. It's been obvious from lurking on the forum that a substantial portion of the regulars are at the very top of their class.

You new here? It just sort of plays out that way. The transfer forum is littered with top 10%+ people ready to transfer. I'm sure the cause and effect is complex and hard to parse out, but if you spend any time browsing legal employment, law students, and transfers you begin to realize how 'top of the class' heavy the population is.T14_Scholly wrote:Why?disco_barred wrote:People who do well are likely to be attracted to the site and to stay on the law student's forum.

I'll take your word for it, ignore all the not-so-smart people and bad advice I've seen on here, and assume that one third of all those who stay on TLS after the application process are destined for the top 5% of their class.

People who are on TLS a lot must be thinking about law school a lot. I don't understand why the correlation is so hard to see. When you're not blinded by skepticism, at least.

Everyone I know who is applying to law school thinks about law school a lot.

People at the top of their class like to be reaffirmed how great they are. Look in on the proles and supply their infinite wisdom.

There's little incentive to lie, but is there all that much incentive to be truthful?

Re: 1L+ TLS'ers, where were you in your first year class rank?
I can definitively see the correlation, and I have no trouble believing that TLSers do very well in law school. However, the nature of this poll and its small sample size make it hard to believe. As someone mentioned before: TLSers go to good schools where there are other smart people -- not everyone can be in the top 5%.JSUVA2012 wrote:People who are on TLS a lot must be thinking about law school a lot. Would I agree that more than 5% of TLSers are in the top 5% at their school? Sure. Is it the case that 30% of TLSers (even assuming 100% honesty in the poll) are in the top 5%? Almost certainly not.

Re: 1L+ TLS'ers, where were you in your first year class rank?
i also dont think there's that many TLSers who are in the top 5% of their class, but for obvious reasons, the crowd TLS tends to draw is of a higher caliber (relatively speaking)...so i think a very high amount of TLSers are in the top 5% of their classes. 30%+ just seems to high for me, but just a bit lower and it is very believable. why would a lot of ppl lie on an anonymous poll? lolMroberts3 wrote:I can definitively see the correlation, and I have no trouble believing that TLSers do very well in law school. hell, we often get top of the class (rank 1) students of T14 or ish schools posting on here asking about transfers or clerkships or whatever...what are the chances multiple top 1 rank students would come find TLS? i would have thought low, but these are all legit so...

I wonder what percent of TLSer is in T14. Then we can see whether 30% in top 5% is reasonable.

Are those of you skeptical of the %age 0Ls?
As a 1L, it was pretty clear that basically the ONLY regular posters on the students forum kicked ass and took names. Note that I said regular posters. i.e. those most likely to pop in and vote in a poll.
I am not for a second skeptical of the claim, and think it reflects extremely strongly on the collective wisdom you can find - and apply - here on TLS.

If this is true, I have to say that about half of TLS (48%) being in the top 10% is pretty intimidating if not superbly impressive. This quite the gathering of intellectuals (in theory)!
