Transfer from a TTT question
I'm a 1L at Syracuse and all of my first semester grades have come in. I ended up with a 3.54 (curve at syracuse is a 3.0). First, in terms of class rank, what percentile will a 3.54 put me in?? I'm guessing maybe top 15% but I could be way off. Second, assuming I at least maintain this GPA, would it be possible for me to transfer to a school in the top 50? Thanks for all of the help!!

It all depends on the standard deviation. A 5/90/5 (A/B/C) curve is much different then a 33/33/33 curve or a 20/30/50 curve. Does your school never rank at all or has class rank simply not been calculated for you yet? If you can get old class rank correlation charts that should give you a really good idea.LuvTheWNBA wrote: First, in terms of class rank, what percentile will a 3.54 put me in??
Assuming that it is top 15%, then yes it would get you into a top 50 school, depending on which one you are trying to get into. However, keep in mind transferring almost always means paying sticker at your transfer school and ITE I would be pretty hesitant to be giving up scholarship money to transfer anywhere outside of the t14 (and even GULC is questionable if you are talking about giving up a lot of scholarship money).LuvTheWNBA wrote: Second, assuming I at least maintain this GPA, would it be possible for me to transfer to a school in the top 50? Thanks... the curve at syracuse is as follows:
A:5%
A-:10%
B+, B, B-, C+, C: 70% - 75%
C-, D, F: 5% - 10%
Given this, could my GPA put me in the top 10%? Also, I was WL-accepted into Syracuse and I'm paying sticker (Yikes, I know). I'm certainly going to transfer if I can get into a school in the top 50.

Or maybe Syracuse will throw $$ at you to stick around.LuvTheWNBA wrote:Thanks... the curve at syracuse is as follows:

Assuming this is top 15%, what's the best school I have a realistic shot of getting into? I'm from the midwest and would eventually like to practice there -- is the University of Minnesota a realistic option?

You shouldn't have a problem transferring up--maybe even to a T1. Just be sure to get excellent recs from good profs there and try to distinguish yourself in any way that you can. I transferred out of SUCOL last year as did 26 others and most fared pretty well. Everyone I know who stayed regrets their decision. Do yourself a favor and stay fiercely committed to getting out of there and into a decent program. No one should be paying sticker price for Syracuse. That is insane, especially considering 'cuse's employment stats. Good luck.

Geeze, 26 people transferred out last year? Where did you transfer to, and if you don't mind me asking, what was your class rank? Do you have any idea where this GPA puts me rank-wise (they havent released the numbers yet)?
I have been pleased with my professors here, and I've made great friends. But you're right, the employment stats are daunting. The buildings are run-down and the law library is a depressing place. At $43k/year, these problems shouldnt exist.

Well 27 total transferred out of Syracuse last year, which includes me. Many others spoke of transferring but got too caught up with finals and other stuff to pursue it. I prefer not to name my current school, but I transferred up.
Your GPA is solid. I don't know where it puts you with respect to class rank, but it's up there. Keep your momentum going 2nd semester--you're in a great position to transfer to a better school. I've seen students transfer into a range of T1s out of cuse. The legal job market is tough across the board right now and a JD from Syracuse isn't exactly going to open any doors--unless you want to work for a small firm in Syracuse. I also think that if you're going to sink the time and money into pursuing a legal career, do it right. Try to get the highest quality educational experience that you can and make sure you graduate from a school you're proud to attend. You'll be affiliated with it for your entire career.

This doesn't sound right. At UVA, our median is a 3.3. A 3.71 is the top 7.5% and the top 25% cutoff is at around a 3.5.School? wrote:Top 10% would be a 3.7 or greater..... I believe... but i could be wrong..
