Re: Law school Loan Consolidation

A lot of banks/lenders aren't offering consolidation anymore, due to the economy. But you can go directly to Department of Education's loan consolidation website (http://www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov/). They have lots of information about consolidation, a calculator for figuring out how much you'll pay monthly, and you can consolidate directly through them.

I graduated with my M.A. in 2004, and consolidated my loans from undergrad and grad then (fortunately back when interest was low, 2.625%). It was a really easy process (although I did mine through Citiassist, which is who my loans were with). I plan to keep my previous loans separate from my new loans so I don't lose the great interest rate if I consolidate my loans for law school.

Which types of loans are you talking about consolidating? If they are federal loans (Stafford, Perkins, PLUS, etc.), you can do so through the federal Direct Loan consolidation program, as the previous poster mentioned. If you have private loans, you will have to consolidate them through a private lender.

I posted some tips re: federal loan consolidation here-
http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 5&t=100075

Am also interested in finding out about private loan consolidation companies.

theavrock- did you get a interest rate deduction as a result of consolidating thru Wells Fargo? Are you paying much less than if you had not consolidated?
