Corsair, how do you feel about curved v. uncurved classes? Are the latter likelier to produce less GPA related stress? A higher proportion of As and A-s? I know your GPA doesn't need any padding, so I ask because I am genuinely interested in your decision process. Where you are, I hope to be someday. If this is your last chance to take the things that you find fascinating on a personal level, that would be my own temptation.

Do you know any of the professors? Does this have any bearing on your decision?

I would vote for the antitrust tax combo. Seems to be the most useful. Although I really like the business strategies for lawyers. You wouldn't be going wrong picking any of them.

Historically, uncurved classes tend to have a higher average grade distribution than curved ones (yay grade inflation). Given that I am still looking for a job, and possibly will be for an unknown amount of time, grades do matter. Finding my classes fascinating is not a priority. Priority is having them (1) be somehow useful and (2) be not so boring or miss-scheduled that I hate going. Grades are a factor of (1) because better grades is more helpful for employment. I have no idea how long I will be looking for a job, or whether I will be trying to find a job again in the near future when people will still care about my grades.

This makes good sense, and confirms what I expected to be true of uncurved classes. I hope impending conditions will soon render your pessimism unwarranted, and allow you to enjoy your last few months in law school.

I heard that a lot of the federal statute classes discuss pretty rapidly changing fields of law, so if you don't actually practice it, in a few years, whatever you learned will have changed entirely. Is that true?

I'm currently enrolled in both Family Law and Basic Fed Income Tax (small section of only 28 thus far). The most important criteria for me in deciding which electives to take this semester was curved v. uncurved. From a couple of reports that I have seen, Shapo and Crane have both been generous graders in uncurved classes.

Also, a casebook is not required for the non-curved tax class. All readings are posted on blackboard.

Employment law interests me and would likely be very useful, but I have heard varying stories (some altogether terrible) with respect to the prof.

I'd take uncurved Fed Tax. Not sure about the 2nd class.

So I'm having second thoughts about my schedule for the upcoming semester. I only need 10 credits, and I have 4 sunk into a clinic. So I only really need two more 3 credit classes.

Here are my options, based on my desired schedule and openings in the classes:

Antitrust (currently enrolled)
Constitutional Criminal Procedure (useful, but meets very early)
Basic Federal Tax (currently enrolled, there is a second uncurved section I can switch to)
Family Law (uncurved, meets at the same time as Antitrust)
Employment Law (uncurved)
Business Strategies for Lawyers (sounds interesting based on course description, won't help me get employment)


So far I have one vote for the Antitrust/Tax combo.

I found tax to be painfully easy if you could handle basic math concepts. Can't imagine you can go wrong with that uncurved tax section.

I vote antitrust #2, and vote strongly against the early meeting class.

I would probably take it if it were not an 8:45 AM class. I am much more of an "attend every day but not read supplements" kind of guy, not a "skip constantly, but read Emanuels" dude.

You always came across as a "skip meals and eat two bacon double cheeseburgers" kinda dood.

Don't take it with Sanchirico. You won't learn anything and you'll hate life.

Corsair, if you know its a good prof, I do think its a useful class and good general life knowledge. I wish I had gotten more from it.

Instead ill be getting 4 credits of a B or B- and still not knowing tax. Ugh.

All of these options sound terrible to me but Crim Pro and Tax (if you have a good prof). Oh, Employment Law might be interesting, if there's a heavy focus on Employment Discrimination.

IMO:
1. Antitrust: eh.
2. Constitutional Crim: seems pretty cool. I would definitely consider it.
3. Any kind of tax class: HELL NO.
4. Family law: could be interesting, so yeah.
5. Employment law: boring.
6. Business strat for lawyers: sounds like a sweet class.

What I have heard: Take what you find interesting. One tax class will not make or break your chances at a job, even if it is in business law. Reality: I don't know for sure.

I've taken both Tax and Family law. They were both very interesting and engaging. I would take Family law as it was less stressful and a bit more fun.
