Was talking to one of my section mates today, who mistakenly, yet genuinely, believed that I must've done really well last semester and am in the top 20%.. I'm not. It was sad and I didn't really know what to say other than laugh it off.
This semester sucks already.

This semester sucks already.

Going out drinking on a near-nightly basis = total drunk? I thought it was just being a law student.

Seconded. You are only a drunk if you keep doing this after you graduate school. (Though some would probably argue that it's also part of being a lawyer.)shifty_eyed wrote:Going out drinking on a near-nightly basis = total drunk? I thought it was just being a law student.

"A drink or two" won't drown any sorrows but point is well made. Getting shit-housed every night is alcoholism even if in undergrad.

I don't remember being in your study group, though I suppose it could have been from the near constant alcoholic coma I was in last year.brotherdarkness wrote:One of the guys in my study group was a total drunk. He was out drinking on a near-nightly basis, even during finals. He went to class on a sporadic (at best) basis. He was, without question, smarter than me. He would read a case and just "get it." I needed to read things twice, use supplements, etc. He didn't do as well as I did, but he wasn't too far behind. Point being, do what works for you.

Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
So uh, do y'all have any advice for a 21-year-old K-JD with absolute dogshit grades and literally nothing else to fall back on who sort of staked his entire life this, because the thought of copping Biglaw was sort of the only positive thing happening in his world as long as he was able to do better than dogshit?
I'm sort of looking for a halftime speech where a football coach has to figure out what to say to a team that's down 35-0, only they have no idea what they did wrong, and they have to go out and play the second half when there's a 98% chance that they'll wish they had just packed up and gone home instead. Either that or a hug.

Please don't take this as insulting, but weren't you unhappy with the amount if effort you put into the semester? Do you think it's worth reexamining your study habits?

Yeah, I did say that, no worries brother. If I could redo anything in my life it would be the two days preceding my Torts exam. Knew I had fucked that one up immediately. I thought I put together a K's exam worth at least an A-. No go. I haven't gotten CivPro back yet but at this point I'm not holding my breath for the A I desperately need. I thought I had the other two classes down pretty well but I've got focus, motivation and organization issues to work on. It's definitely all on the table. I don't know what exactly I'll have to do but I will fucking do it. I appreciate the advice brother.Mal Reynolds wrote:Please don't take this as insulting, but weren't you unhappy with the amount if effort you put into the semester? I'm in a similar position as well.... two grades at MVP: B, and B+ (in a class where i got an A- on the midterm!)... two grades left, but one of them is K which I'm really nervous about.... praying for an A- and B+ so that I can cop that Median.... median would be lovely right now

In a similar vein - I think I remember you posting about the focus/motivation/organization stuff as well. Would you consider talking to a counselor at school? I'm quite sure they deal with this kind of thing all the time, and the work stuff/emotional stuff get really tied together. (I don't mean this as a comment on your mental health generally at all - just that it can be really helpful to talk to someone about coping strategies, it's not always just a function of trying to power through on willpower. I say this as someone has had major procrastination issues.)Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote:Yeah, I did say that, no worries brother. Can we quote this for future K-JDs?Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote:So uh, do y'all have any advice for a 21-year-old K-JD with absolute dogshit grades and literally nothing else to fall back on who sort of staked his entire life this, because the thought of copping Biglaw was sort of the only positive thing happening in his world as long as he was able to do better than dogshit?

Nelson, I completely agree. If I could go back I would've worked a couple of years. My lack of w/e posed problems for my 1L summer and I can only imagine what it will pose for 2L OCI

Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
No worries brother. I've been seeing one for anxiety and depression since October. I'm still going to talk to them because I've found it useful to try and vocalize some of this stuff, so that I can pinpoint concerns that were previously amorphous. The counselors seem a little off-point when it comes to practical application, though:A. Me: "I'm just worried that this lack of focus is going to be harmful to me academically."
Moderately Attentive Lady: "Mm-hmm. And how does that make you feel?"
Me: "...worried."
Moderately Attentive Lady: (as though I'm a third grader) "Well, that's gotta stink, doesn't it?"
Me: "Well, yeah, but I was wondering if you had any advice for how to help me focus more efficiently."
Moderately Attentive Lady: (long pause) "Why don't you tell me about traumatic events from your childhood?"

I think every 1L should watch some sort of halftime motivational speech before the second semester.brotherdarkness wrote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG_f1GzmwHo

"I got a B man, it's over."
"What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until you get LOLDINGed at OCI! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough, the tough start outlining! *runs into law library, realizes it closed an hour ago, gets back on the Internet* What the fuck happened to the TLS I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest semester of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Mono, we might get curvepwned." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Con Law? It's a dead course! Property? Dead! Crim?"
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
