I think you have the right idea not floodlighting other people at the law school with this, but maybe go talk to the class dean about it. Our class dean is really wonderful and it is his job to deal with the hard stuff. You should not have to suffer alone.nickb285 wrote:No, she's not. She's been having issues to one degree or another for a long time (she's had a pretty rough life in a lot of ways), and this isn't the first time she's had to check herself in, but she seemed like she was doing alright so I wasn't expecting it. I'm glad she's getting help, I'd be way more worried about her if she were just sitting at home wanting to kill herself, but I just wish there was some way I could magically make her better.stillwater wrote:sorry to hear this. hope you're doing alright. is your friend in law school? i hope everyone tries to take some of the great advice here to heart and try, as hard as things are, to keep things in perspective. its not worth anyone's health.
Thanks for the kind words, SW and TSL. This may not be the best of places for it, but I needed to vent and most/all of my close friends back home are her friends too so I don't want to be all like HAY GUISE GUESS WHO'S IN THE HOSPITAL, and I'm not really close enough with anyone here to want to talk about it in person.

Damn. Honestly feel like I may have just bombed an exam. Not just the usual post exam freakout, I know there was huge issues I straight up missed or just fumbled through. Felt like I was the only one not typing for long periods of time. Only half a bottle of wine here and nothing nearby. Ugh.

Yeah, it was just a brutal one I guess. Only get two days before crim on friday, and I'm in the clear for now.

I know I know...can I learn crim in 2 days? The class ended like 2 months ago, I don't remember a thing but rape and murder are both frowned upon.

okay, here's my advice. snuggle up to a good outline. but remember that a lot of essays in crim present new crimes you havent dealt with. so you need your statutory interp toolkit. you need to interpret for actus reus and mens rea. then apply apply apply. all the while roving for your overarching concepts like accomplice liability, attempt and conspiracy. obviously check past exams. between the outline and having a game plan for how to approach unseen crimes, you should be okay. crim tends to be intensive law to fact, so just be ready to apply and like always dont fight the fact pattern, be flexible.emarxnj wrote:thesealocust wrote:Wine will help, but y'all will be fine <3

I mean I'm exaggerating of course, I remember a good chunk. All her old exams are just one big MPC vs. CL fact pattern, then a smaller one discussing rape or murder. My TA said that MPC vs. CL chart that's everywhere online was helpful for him, but I'm gonna go through it and amend it with my notes. Got the Dressler book too. I'd rather finish strong, then peter out on what could be a less difficult exam.stillwater wrote:okay, here's my advice. snuggle up to a good outline. but remember that a lot of essays in crim present new crimes you havent dealt with. so you need your statutory interp toolkit. you need to interpret for actus reus and mens rea. then apply apply apply. all the while roving for your overarching concepts like accomplice liability, attempt and conspiracy. obviously check past exams. between the outline and having a game plan for how to approach unseen crimes, you should be okay. crim tends to be intensive law to fact, so just be ready to apply and like always dont fight the fact pattern, be flexible.emarxnj wrote:thesealocust wrote:Wine will help, but y'all will be fine <3

Plenty of time! Seriously. That is more than enough time. Just find a good outline and learn the shit out of it and you'll be golden!emarxnj wrote:

Been looking through the outline I got from my TA who had her last year, looks pretty good. Most of it is more familiar to me than I thought. Her old exams don't seem to introduce many "new" crimes, although being ready for them can't hurt. Seems to stick to the same stuff. She actually got in trouble a while back apparently for giving out an exam that was the exact same thing as an archived one.shock259 wrote:Plenty of time! Seriously. That is more than enough time. Question about crim exams. I'm wondering how one really pulls away from the pack on this exam? It seems like a lot of it is going to be cut and dry, is it just about trying to interpret the facts for either side, and applying ever charge feasible? It just seems like there is a lot less room for interpretation. I'm not worried about knowing the material, I do, and it's open book (great OL from brotherdarkness BTW, kudos), but it seems like everyone should have pretty similar answers. Hope that makes sense.

Crim is really no different than any other 1L exam. Some people will miss issues, some people just won't get it. Some people won't know the law, others will but won't be able to apply it to save their lives.
The key, like any other exam, is to spot the issues, argue both sides, treat issues proportionally to their importance, and find little subsidiary issues that are raised by your treatment of the larger ones. The only differentiating fact about crim is that since it is statutory, usually it is useful to interpret the statutory language before the analysis. For schools that don't have those regulatory introduction classes, crim is usually your only introduction to statutory interpretation, so that element is definitely at play in the background.

Someone help talk me off the ledge.
Walked out of K's on Monday feeling positive and confident. I felt that the test was pretty straightforward, but last night I realized that I missed something I could have talked about and that I probably missed a multiple choice question, and it has pretty much wrecked my confidence. My inner monologue is like, "If you missed that, and you though the test wasn't too bad, what ELSE did yo miss?"
Anyone have a similar feeling?

That makes sense. The statutory aspect is what makes it seem more "cut and dry" to me I suppose, but I guess otherwise it's just like any other exam (how drunk I'm getting after it notwithstanding). Our torts professor actually did a whole class on statute interpretation (NJ texting and driving), the guy kinda wanted to make the torts class our "intro to law school". It was helpful sometimes, got into procedural stuff a bit too, but we never completed the syllabus on time. Anyway, thanks for the response. I just have a fear everyone is going to put the same answers and I'll get fucked by the curve.stillwater wrote:I have specifically and carefully chosen your question for answer.emarxnj wrote:Question about crim exams. Someone will put this better, but don't think about. Nobody hits every issue, and from what I understand, grading is a crapshoot. Move on to the next exam or enjoy your break.Hoosiers wrote:Someone help talk me off the ledge.

Step away from the edge friend! Those after-the-fact "oh god I missed ____" realizations happen ALL the time. It doesn't mean anything and it can be treated with liquor.Hoosiers wrote:Someone help talk me off the ledge.
