One is to back up music and photos. It's light so I take it with me when I travel to share music and photos
The second is to back up my laptop weekly. It's 320 GB or so.

I plan on doing the same thing with time machine. But I'm getting a flash drive because:

1) It's never a bad idea to have your notes backed up in more than one place

2) Then when I want to access my notes from some other computer, I don't have to always email myself an updated copy or worry that I forgot to email them to myself. It will all be there in my portable flash drive.

They aren't that expensive and I could see them being helpful when your on the go, unlike the external harddrive which is just at your house.

It's a program on Leopard that allows you to go back in time to retrieve a document if you have saved it to an external harddrive.

If I were to save a document on May 24th, then i made major changes to the same document and saved it on May 27th. But today I realize that when I completely changed everything yesterday, that I messed up and what I did on May 24th was perfect.

With time machine, I can go back and retrieve the May 24th document, even tho I had saved over it yesterday. Also it automatically updates and saves normal activities like address book, so in case you accidentally delete your address book you can go back with out having to manually save everything to the external hard drive

Time machine is a program within the computer. I haven't used it yet, because you need an external har drive to set it up so I have no idea how good it actually is.

Looks like it is a wireless external HD that backups automatically, and I think people were giving that mixed reviews. I assume with time machine you can use any external HD, not just the timecapsule.

Yea, time machine and time capsule are two separate things, but they can be used together. I want a time capsule because it's really cool looking, sleek, and wireless, but it seems really expensive for what it is. I looked at it at the Apple store the other day and I feel like I can get something similar (minus wirless) for about half the price. I don't know if wireless backup is that important to me, I think I can get into the habit of plugging a HD in everyday pretty easily.

I haven't used time machine yet but plan too once school starts. I don't have an external HD yet because I was trying to decide which one to get. I was thinking a mybook or whatever those are called.

I think it was a wonderful topic. It is useful for law students. It is very nice. ..........

I think it is meant for corporations who have group projects going on and the members are in different locations/countries. You can post messages and rough draft of assignments in the program and other members have access to it............

Okay sorry to get back on topic but:

Laser printer or inkjet? Is it really worth it to spend the extra money (Dell has a color inkjet for $199 right now for students) to get faster printing, or will an inkjet do just fine? And, is having a color printer worth it? I was going to get color mostly due to aljr's pics of notes in her blog.

Well schools have computer labs, right? I was planning to just get the cheapest printer possible and figure that I will try to print at the computer lab as much as possible, and just use my own personal printer when I really need something fast. We're going to be spending lots of time in the library anyway (my school's computer lab is inside the library) and assuming printing is free (up to a certain page limit, I'm sure), why waste your own ink?

Not being able to print on my own is infuriating.

So to answer M2's original questions, for me I'd say 2-3 boxes should be good for the semester depending on how many reams are in each box.

OfficeMax has a promotion where you get a big brown paper shopping bag, and you get 15% off of everything you can fit in it (I think it excludes things like printers / computers). My firm handed out some of these bags - I don't know if it's just a corporate promotion or what.

I have always just used Google Docs for that. You can sign in with your regular google id and everyone can be updating the document at the same time. It's AMAZING. Plus, then it's stored online and therefore always accessible.
