Idk. My gf has a dog so it is actually pretty fun to go to the park (inevitably with dog shit) and let it off the leash. Anyway, my point still stands that there is no reason to spend $100 a week on dates, especially when you are paying for it with loans.

This is the real thing. Doing things like that is nice when you are getting to know someone but after a certain point you are really only catching up on the last 24 - 36 hours or less so there isn't really any reason.

I don't know about Chicago, but NY has awesome ways to pay less than $20 for a date. One example: walk over the Brooklyn Bridge (one of the prettiest and romantic places you can take a lady), tell her about this 100+ year old pizza place on the Brooklyn side (pay $10 for 2), chill and watch the skyline, walk back across the bridge during sunset, hit up South Street Seaport for ice cream (you obviously want to share one, $6), take the subway home (she has her own metrocard, only costs you $2.25), commence massage and foreplay, get down and dirty, sleep and then she take the train home. Total cost of awesome date = $18.25

1) Of course you don't have to date law students, and you probably shouldn't, but you came in this thread and criticized the dating habits of law students so our points are pretty fair.

2) They don't, but I get by just fine so I don't think its too much of a hold-up. If you require a guy to spend lavishly then good for you, but don't act like every girl does. See my point number one regarding why, bsides usually being hot, i like nurses and school teachers (low maintenance).

If I spend $400/mo on dates with my girlfriend, for 9 months of the year during which I'm living on loans, for three years, that's like $12k at graduation. The interest payment on that is compared to the $200k I will otherwise owe, that's a drop in the bucket, for a huge increase in QoL.

Are you going out to dinner on every date? Even if you were, $50/dinner for 8 dinners = $400, and that's a fairly upscale dinner twice a week. I used to do something close to that absurd, but it only takes you so far. Cooking dinner yourself or going to do something else like attractions/museums/movies (even at $11/ticket and spending ticket value on popcorn and/or beverage, that date only comes out to around $30-35).

I'd like to clarify that I agree with your overall reasoning, but not your methods.

I'd also like to clarify that Chipotle is delicious, but you're right -- it's not a date.

My girlfriend lives with me, so cooking dinner isn't really a date...

And where do you get $50 dinners? I live in downtown Chicago. $50 with drinks is tight for the bar next door much less a nicer place.

My point is, on the dating market, a pretty and pleasant girl can choose who to date. If a law student is competitive with the market otherwise available to her, why not date him? But if he's gonna be boring and cheap, what's the point? Esp in a city like Chicago, where there are plenty of MDs, traders, other professionals, bad boys in shitty bands, smoking hot cops, etc. to choose from.

Dated an elementary teacher throughout my first year and it went pretty good. Not too complicated. Dating a girl that is in my law class would drive me crazy I think. I do not need somebody that knows when I should be studying or not and bitching at me about getting my school work done, etc... I get enough of that as it is.

I will say that I'm pretty sure two people in my section were dating that sat in front of me in a couple of classes and it was a pretty good deal for the guy. He barely came to class and she always took notes for him.

He thought it was a good deal. Gunner bitch probably messed up his notes.


But yeah, nurses and school teachers tend to be pretty low maintenance, relatively smart (though this does not hold true for the prek through like 3rd grade teachers), have good "maternal" (taking care of you) instincts, and can be surprising nymphos. in another thread DF said TCR for NU is the nurses at the hospital next door. I'm looking forward to chicago.

While this is certainly true, do note that in order to bag the nurses next door you're competing with actual doctors. Not "students" living off loans, but legit doctors at a top teaching hospital. And they're hot. Chiseled jaws and great abs and the whole bit. You stand no chance.

There comes a point in a relationship where it's just silly to carry on some contrived notion of "going out". If you can't enjoy each other's company without breaking the bank, well, that's when you're doing it wrong. That's not to say you can't go out every now and then and have a nice dinner, but $400/month seems pretty damn excessive to me.
