Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
Like every other post I've made on TLS has been about crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women. If you want TheSeaLocust to be your 1L cage-match arms dealer, there are other threads where he will be happy to oblige.
In this one he will merely remind you that 1L is silly artificial stress, law school and the legal profession are designed to produce anxiety, and that everything will be just fine no matter how things shake out.

I'm going back over my outlines and adding stuff instead of condensing. Am I doing it wrong?

I'll play the devil's advocate here: You're all screwed. If you don't have all-encompassing one page outlines for every class by now, you will get straight C's, strike out at OCI, and end up scraping gum off the bottoms of tables at Dave and Busters while the rest of us are dancing the harlem shake at extravagant weddings for the daughters of rainmaker partners.

I feel pretty comfortable with torts and crim law.. My outlines aren't finished but my torts outline is less than 15, my crim is approaching 40.

Totally doing something right.sublime wrote:Could someone reassure me that outline lengths don't mean anything?
As I continue to go through stuff, I will add as needed, but right now my Torts outline is 10 pages compared to 15-20, if not more for most. And my Contracts outline is looking like it will end up around 20-25 pages, while others range from 30-60. Am I doing something wrong?

They don't mean anything. Are you worried they are too short? My 1L outlines were between 10 and 15 pages each and I did alright in law school : )sublime wrote:Could someone reassure me that outline lengths don't mean anything?

This helps. Our school hosted a panel of 2Ls and 3Ls who are in the top 10% and they were asked about how long each of their outlines are and they ranged from 60-70 for one person to some girl who said "Over 100."thesealocust wrote:They don't mean anything. I was sitting there with my 14 page outline in my hand and just shook my head as other 1Ls gasped and had nervous breakdowns.

i finished at the top of my 1L class and my outlines were max 20 pages. MAX. that was my long-form outline. i usually had a 1-2 page attack outline that operated as a checklist. a 100 page outline come exam time is like going to war with your accordion.KD35 wrote:This helps. Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
My current outline plan is as follows:
1) Index/Table of contents for quick lookup
2) 1 page checklist
3) 10 page black letter law section composed primarily of restatements
4) 50 page monster in case there's some detail I forget
My plan is to only look at the 50 page outline if there is some detail I'm unsure of. It's more of a security blanket than anything else. Thoughts?

No strategy here. It sounds like you're working very hard. You'll be fine

Will I be okay if I'm not top 10%? This seems hopeless. Everyone is seemingly working way harder while I just study at a snail's pace.

Everyone is seemingly working way harder while I just study at a snail's pace.Depends on a number of things, the most important being what school you go to. If you're not in the top 10% at HYS, you'll be okay (unless you define okay as summering with Wachtell and being on the fast-track to a Supreme Court clerkship). The farther you drift from the T14, the dicier things get outside of the top 10%. If you're eligible to sit for the patent bar or have some incredible work experience (Goldman, PWC, etc.), you will have a leg up. URM status might provide a boost, but I've heard it's not comparable to law school admissions.
Having said all of that, I should add that YMMV. Does your family have a firm and you're in law school simply to get the degree? If so, graduate and pass the bar. Are more interested in working for a small firm rather than a big firm? Well, then, top 10% might not be as important as the "networking" schtick you'll hear from career services. Are you gunning for PI? I'm sure grades are important, but a demonstrable interest (clinics and other real-world experience) can make or break you.
Of course you will!
It's just law school.
It's just an anxious time - block everyone else out, and believe me, they're terrified and feel like they're slacking and putting on airs too.espressocream wrote:This seems hopeless. Everyone is seemingly working way harder while I just study at a snail's pace.

None of my outlines are done and apparently I thought I was above taking notes in K for the past month. First exam in a week. My plan for studying doesn't even make sense anymore.

You can do it. Prioritize your outlines and distill them as best you can. YOU CAN DO IT.espressocream wrote:None of my outlines are done and apparently I thought I was above taking notes in K for the past month. First exam in a week. My plan for studying doesn't even make sense anymore.
I haven't gotten as far along as I wanted, but I know myself too well and if I start too early, I will fizzle out. I need a bit of that pressure to get it done.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
