I don't think so. When he was in undergrad, he jacked kids on the way to junior high for their school supplies.

And some days the elementary school kids. They always had the neat toys like mini-staplers shaped like a dinosaur mouth. You can never have too many of those handy.

I can get you a commercial paper cutter from work.

Pick one for under 50 bucks so I don't need to get approval.

flash drives are useful, but I think everyone should have an external hard drive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 50+-+%2475
you can basically back up your whole computer onto them. this is really helpful if you wind up getting a new computer and still want access to the stuff on your old one. I actually got one to hold all the files from my old laptop, to back-up the files on my office computer, and to back-up stuff on my laptop. Most of them are like 120 GB. Not ideal for carrying everywhere with you, but they fit nicely in a back-pack or larger purse.

Perhaps a dumb question, but -- is highlighting necessary? Perhaps it's a superstitious reverence for books, but I have NEVER used highlighters outside of editing someone else's papers -- I always hated buying a used textbook in college and finding it had been marked up. Are reading and careful note-taking not enough in law school?

Nice question. It took me while to get over my highlight phobia. But yes, it is necessary. There's just no way you're going to remember all of it otherwise, and taking down the important things -- I tried that in the beginning -- is going to take you hours and hours longer than just highlighting the text in the book. Get used to treating your casebooks as exercise notebooks.

Highlighting is not necessary if you continue to brief cases. I hate highlighting in books, so I prefer to take detailed case briefs that have all of my comments and notes on my computer rather than scattered through all of my case books.

Always a good idea to have your notes backed up and saved in a few places other then just on your computer.

I call them flash drives. Please go back and edit your post so it reflects my style.

I plan on getting an external hard drive to use with time machine, and I can see how a flash drive would be useful, but what exactly are you guys using them for?

Something I found useful (and it's free!!):

I set up a second gmail account to send myself backup copies of my one note files. It was helpful because I had access to my files, even when I didn't have my computer, as long as I had the internet. After a semester (or two) of notes...those babies can get huge.

Another free tidbit:

I also used Microsoft Groove for my Con Law study group this past semester...it is the most awesomest thingy I ever did see! I plan on setting up a different Groove workspace for each of my study groups in the fall.

NewHere!! How is summer going for you?!

I didn't know what Groove was either until about 3 months ago. I was playing around in the Microsoft Office 2007 Suite trying to find a way to send my study group members the class recordings from our Con Law class. I opened Groove and was able to post all of the recordings in one place. It is like a collobrative workspace thingy.

I think it is meant for corporations who have group projects going on and the members are in different locations/countries. You can post messages and rough draft of assignments in the program and other members have access to it. So it eliminates the need to email because you all have access to latest draft of the document.

I found that it worked well for our study group as well. Here is some info on it: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/groov ... 31033.aspx
