Some firms don't look at your 2L grades? Does that mean most people have jobs lined up a good year or more before they graduate law school? When do most people start looking for jobs? I was expecting it to be midway 3L...

By all means don't gun like you (probably) did during 1L, but don't shoot yourself in the foot either, especially if you might want to clerk.
True. A summer job isn't a permanent offer. A permanent offer can be deferred (or you can be let go in a disasterous economy). A permanent offer isn't a career.

Motivation for 2L is really lacking. I am trying, but I only have 2 classes with actual finals, and I feel like both the classes are fairly straight forward and I can pick up everything I dont know through supplements. Other classes are just papers which are pretty easy and the classes are uncurved. I also work at a firm, am on a journal and do field hours for a practicum. Thus, I do the bare minimum for classes. I'll tell you next year whether I regret it or not.
