The later chapters are much more useful IMO.Rooney wrote:acrossthelake wrote:I don't plan to do any 0L summer prep at all. Tried to read GTM, but got bored with how obvious it was.
About two chapters in. It reminds me of the essay on the LSAT. A or B? While A has some good points, and B has some bad points, B is better because of superior points blah blah blah

I'm traveling in July. I'm saving the rest of my $$ for LS.
Gun hard w/ GTM, LEEWS, E&E's? I won't burn out because I'm doing absolutely nothing all day.
Find a temp. 1 month job?
Do nothing? What do people do to "relax" before 1L?
Spend time developing an alcohol tolerance. From my experience those in law school with no tolerance end up doing poorly academically. I actually think this might be true.

Wasting time "prepping" prior to law school is stupid because you don't yet know how to "think" properly. You're going to handle it like undergrad, and you don't know what you are actually looking for. You won't understand the system. Yes, you can read "law," and yes, you'll pick stuff up, just like I know a little about my car's engine, having read the owner's manual, but you'll focus on the trees without realizing no one gives a shit about the trees - it's the dirt thats important.
Maybe it's difficult to articulate, but I see it now when I talk to non-lawyers about legal issues. They'll be going on about what they think is important, and I'll realize the issue is notice, not liability. Try and explain that and they'll see injustice, when in fact notice is step one in justice.
The only way to learn what you need to know is to see someone get humiliated in class when they can't explain why the court remanded the case after seeming to agree with the trial court's summary judgment legal analysis (hint: mixed questions of law and fact are inappropriate for summary and best left for the jury).
Like people said on page one - smoke dope and jerk off. You won't have as much time as you'd like for either once law school gets rolling.
Moreover, I can see how it'd be a hindrance to "prep" - now you think you know something and might tune out things that don't conform to your expectations - but the unintuitive is important! You may not be able to absorb what you REALLY need to know. Meanwhile, the jerkoff stoner is soft clay ready for shaping and open to the fact that he doesn't yet know shit (and isn't a douchebag, super-proud of all the "prepping" he did over the summer while everyone else was just jerking off and smoking).
And reading while baked can be fun and productive - you may even have "ah ha!" moments - reading while drunk is literally not possible.

It's not the tolerance - its understanding the nature of the recovery process. Too many people get wasted and then have to study the next day while hungover because they didn't budget their time properly. Now they've wasted time they cannot get back. It's not the handling your shit - get fucked up, go ahead - it's knowing when it's ok to drink at all. Plan for drinking accordingly. And the only way to plan is to know what to expect. And the only way to know what to expect is to find your limits.nickwar wrote:Spend time developing an alcohol tolerance. I'd spend "prep" money on hookers and blow then go on a great road trip.

My 0L Prep
1. Getting To Maybe - I found the entire book came together near the end. It is an interesting read and something I plan to go over a few times before summer starts.
2. 1L of a Ride - I wanted something that would at least giving me a starting point in regard to what to expect when school starts.
3. Law School Confidential - The chapter about the registrar was golden. I mostly skimmed around the book though.
4. Learning Legal Reasoning - Just an introduction to briefing and just overall introduction to Law School.
5. How to Do Your Best On Law School Exams - Using this along with GTM and LEEWS to give me an idea about how to approach exams.
6. LEEWS - Haven't done it yet. I plan to do with the week before school starts.
-----------
Is what I am doing counterproductive? I made the decision not to even try to learn the law but instead focus solely on exams.
Good or bad?

Was it the new edition or the old one? The new one (came out in May) is more ITE focused and is much more focused on strategies relevant to law students coming into an extremely tough job market. But I am not sure any of it will really help though.Seminole_305 wrote: 3. Law School Confidential - The chapter about the registrar was golden. I mostly skimmed around the book though.
