North Face is okay, but I think there are better deals out there. You are really just paying for the logo these days. If you are going to go that route, might as well spend a little more $ (or maybe even the same amount) and buy a more quality pack from Osprey, Black Diamond or Lowe Alpine. Campmor usually has good deals and occasionally the REI Outlet will as well.

That has just been my personal experience. YMMV.

The sale is over, but I got the Timbuk2 Swig

on sale for $45 from ebags. I ended up getting the one in the bottom left hand corner, the colors are questionable but it was the only color on sale for forty-five. I haven't loaded it with any books yet but it feels really durable and roomy enough. Comfy to carry too, not too big for a small person.

Also it doesn't have a billion pockets which is nice because I swear to god I lose things if there are too many pockets.

Sure, mainly they are - just like North Face. But, they also make day packs & other packs that can be used for school. Black Diamond, definitely less so but they make really quality items.

I would also throw out Kelty for a decent value, but I've found their quality is about on par with TNF.

Honestly, I would not want to stick a laptop and heavy books into that burberry bag. That would stress me out.

It doesn't look like a very comfortable bag for carrying a lot of heavy books in.

ETA: looking again that little strap looks like it would dig right into your shoulder with even 1 or 2 books in there.

I'm likely to get a Targus or Oakley bag since I take public transit and walk. I want something comfy and rugged enough. My roommate has a nice Oakley bag and swears by it. Fairly pricey though.

I have The North Face Surge backpack. I can fit two textbooks, a 15" laptop + charger, tons of pens/pencils/highlighters/etc., and a few folders comfortably. Best pack I've owned, plus it's really durable, waterproof, and has a great warranty.

Biggest complaint is that it's hard to fit my nalgene in the bottle-holder pockets on the sides =[ im thirsty

The laptop part is really well padded and the straps are super comfy. The outside claims to have a rain proof coating on it.

People seem to really want the big bags on here. Are they really that necessary?

I know I am looking for a large bag to hold all my books because I am going PT and I will be working full time. So I don't want the hassle of switching out books and trying to remember what I need for what day. Also, with a very busy schedule I want to have all my books easily at hand so if I do get a few hours to kill I can get in some quick review. Maybe that's just me but the goal is to find a bag that I can take to the office and not look like a douche wearing a suit and a jansport backpack, and that will hold everything I need.
