Some people just don't require alcohol to loosen up, I probably talk too much as it is, alcohol just makes me want to hug people. lol

Re: So, I don't drink...
Honestly, I do not drink as much as I used to. I am really into working out and drinking kills it. I get much more of a "high" from lifting weights than getting faced. With that being said, I may drink 1-2 days a week at MOST, sometimes not at all. It is usually an occasion, such as after exams, acing something big, reward etc, that i get faced. I'd rather get laid and perform well there lol.
Don't worry, most people will not have the time to drink like animals like in undergrad on frat row.... good memories.. lol

I'm not saying I would peer pressure this person into drinking; I wouldn't waste my time. I'm just saying it's probably worth ordering a beer when you're in a bar where everyone else is drinking so that people don't think you're uptight.[/quote]
There are many reasons why people don't drink (ranging from alcoholism to Mormonism). That's not being up tight, thats making a personal decision. If you get self-righteous on drinkers thats a different story, but otherwise, there's no reason to judge others for their purely personal decisions.

That's fine. I obviously wouldn't insist an ex-alcholic or pregnant woman drinks just because everyone else does.legalease9 wrote: There are many reasons why people don't drink (ranging from alcoholism to Mormonism). And it's not so much about judging others as connecting to people. People go out for celebratory drinks, like charlesjd mentions above, and if you aren't at least an occasional drinker, you probably aren't going to get invited as often. I realize someone is going to turn this on me now and say "Well, maybe they don't want to hang out with you, you big mean judgemental alcoholic loser." Which is fine. But I still think the occasional beer can be quite delicious, and that going out for drinks with people is a lot of fun. I apologize for encouraging the OP to give it a shot.

Re: So, I don't drink...
OP, you're definitely not alone. I don't drink either. No particular reason other than preference; I've never enjoyed anything about alcohol so I just bypass it politely. I'm also a workout junky, and I prefer to eat clean anyway to perform better at the sports I do. It's just what feels right for me/makes me happy. When people ask, I find that they may ask why out of curiosity but if you move on and have fun/relax then no one will care. If anyone is berating or belittling you for not drinking, they probably aren't going to be someone you want to be around anyway, alcohol or not.

As long as you're not entirely uncomfortable at a bar or alcohol-related settings you shouldn't have a problem.
If all else fails, just get coke and tell them their jack daniels in it (not that anyone would have a reason to ask anyway).

Haha, a soda can taste good, and you can still have fun. I'm sure the OP is mature enough that he or she has given it a shot, or has decided not to for personal reasons that are none of your business.cubswin wrote:But I still think the occasional beer can be quite delicious, and that going out for drinks with people is a lot of fun. Anyone walking around bitching about an activity occuring around them (whether it be drinking or snowboarding) is a pain in the ass. Doesn't sound like OP was suggesting that she planned on doing anything like that.

Tons of people don't order alcohol in bars. They're called designated drivers. You seriously think people immediately think someone is uptight if he/she doesn't have a drink?cubswin wrote:I'm not saying I would peer pressure this person into drinking; I wouldn't waste my time. I won't drink at law school either. I won't go to parties, and I won't have fun. However, every time I disappear after class this guy juuuust might show up...

Wait a minute... what were you doing awake at 3:24 am? Nobody is up at that hour with a BAC below .1. I'm calling shenanigans.dontworrybehappy wrote:It seems like most law school socials/bar reviews revolve around alcohol :-\. Am I going to have a really sucky experience when I start my 1L this fall?

I'm cool with drinking, but my body isn't. I've got a ridiculously low tolerance. I don't even get the good parts of being drunk either, after three beers I skip straight to the throwing up stage. So I'm unwillingly in a similar situation to the OP. I guess I'll just nurse my drinks during law school.

You survived undergrad where, unless you went to a bible college, drinking was even MORE ingrained in the lifestyle. If you didn't feel awkward in college you won't feel awkward in law school. Or just get one beer and nurse it throughout the night.

I don't think you'll have a problem. I have gotten past my frat guy "get schwasted" stage. I used to go to big raging keggers, get drunk, act obnoxious, and go home and proceed to drunk-text half the girls in my phone. Now I just go out to the bar for a few drinks and socialize. I plan on drinking just as often during law school, but not in excess.tomhobbes wrote:I'm cool with drinking, but my body isn't. I've got a ridiculously low tolerance. Just go out and have a beer or two and no one will think any different.

While this is a great opportunity to make jokes at your expense, realistically, this should not bother you.
I was a pretty moderate drinker before law school and I have actually discovered that I drink far less since I started. There is just no time for it. In any event, I don't think anybody is going to care one way or another whether or not you want to drink.

I'm not gonna be a dick about it if people are drinking! I'm not socially inept lol. It's not for health reasons or anything, I did drink in college (not like crazy), but it's just not for me. Personal choice.
