Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
That makes sense to me. Using a supplement as a base as at best a 'meh' idea and at worst a bad idea. Not every prof teaches the same cases, in the same order, or the same parts of cases, or with the same emphasis. Supplements can help give you perspective, but starting from them can lead you off the path, especially before you have experience with law school classes and exams.brotherdarkness wrote:Not TSL (obviously), but my unsolicited opinion is as follows:sublime wrote:TSL, do you have any thoughts about using a supplement to make the base of your outline then adding cases/class notes into it? Or is it better to try to just create it yourself completely?
Use your syllabus to structure your outline (i.e., create headings). This way, you know from the start that you aren't missing anything that your professor covered and you don't include anything that you're professor didn't cover. Start filling in the outline with your own notes and, when you have gaps or need to flesh something out a little bit more, turn to a supplement. At the end, compare your outline to one from your school's outline bank, a friendly 2L/3L, etc., to ensure that you're not missing anything fundamental.

Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
so i took a short practice midterm and just saw the model answer and i didnt do very well. i didnt do horribly but i missed a couple things. it was a combination of not understanding one point of the law quite right (it seems most people didnt understand that point because our professor wasnt super clear) and just not writing it the way the professor wants so I'll have to practice writing it the way she likes it.
Do people find that as they take practice exams they understand the BLL better (how to apply it better etc)? also, my performance on this doesnt mean im going to do badly right....

You'll be fine. The first step towards being kinda good at something is sucking at something! And practicing will make you better.
Fun Soothing TheSeaLocust Anecdote:
I took a practice exam as a 1L and asked a professor to look it over. The professor met with me, and the first words I heard from the prof were: "TheSeaLocust, I looked over what you wrote for this problem and I am very concerned." This was in early December.

I'd tell you how my next conversation with that prof went, after exams, but I am far too modest to recount such things on a public forum.

-LRW needs to be started ASAP, can't find handout
-Outlines to be started/finished, won't be able to do property practice exam
-"Need" to go into Manhattan to pick up tickets to game Sunday
-Put the wrong liquid in dishwasher, tried to clean it out, ran it and of course apartment full of foam.

Much appreciated, if small animals can wear pancakes as headgear all is right in the world I suppose. I also lost my debit card today, so it just wasn't in the cards for me today I guess. I'm gonna have a "glass" of bourbon and watch the game. And by glass I mean tupperware.

Word limit for open memo was 3,000. Turned mine it at 3,300. Professor didn't seem like she cared that much about the word count, because it's a department-wide thing, but it's still there. Am I fucked? I think a lot of people went over because they got the impression that she wouldn't care.

Re: TheSeaLocust's 1L Anxiety Meditation Retreat & Spa
So, lately our profs have been giving out really on point advice for exam writing/taking -- what to do, what not to do, etc. Pretty much all the stuff TLS, TSL, and GTM have taught me, they've said to all of us at one point or another and especially in these last few weeks. Do people just not listen to this kind of advice? Or does this mean that whatever advantage there was to being on the right side of the information gap regarding law exams is gone now? I am worried. I was so ready to apply law to fact. But I don't think I can do it better than the geniuses in my section now that they know that's what they're supposed to be doing.

People panic, fail to practice, and fail to internalize. The 1L grade-curve works so well partially because for many people, the first set of exams happens long before they have climbed the learning-curve of the skill of exam taking.

I actually thought the same thing when I was at your stage in 1L. Turns out, no one really took in a lot of the info, even if it was clearly presented. Everyone gets all kind of conflicting information about law school, exams, etc. It can very easily get lost in the noise.North wrote:So, lately our profs have been giving out really on point advice for exam writing/taking -- what to do, what not to do, etc. Pretty much all the stuff TLS, TSL, and GTM have taught me, they've said to all of us at one point or another and especially in these last few weeks.
