Great thread Waterman, if for no other reason than getting to read Sogui's insightful comments.

This is nothing more than a wild guess, and I'm sure it is very unhealthy for my mental sanity, but I'll play...
Torts: A (94)
Property: A- (92)
Contracts: B- (82)
Legal Practice: B (87)
This puts me just above median, right in the "Stick with it, or drop out?" zone.

I would almost certainly stick with it if I were above median, but the thought of dropping out would cross my mind, and I'm sure many on TLS would advocate it.plum wrote:seriously?romothesavior wrote:This puts me just above median, right in the "Stick with it, or drop out?" zone.

Bold prediction. But I'm pulling for you. Good luck bud.JCougar wrote:I wouldn't be totally shocked if I were in the top 5% or so, but I'm also willing to have my expectations smashed. If I were to bet even money, though, I'd put that point at top 20.

LOL. Me too, minus the "women" part haha. I'm not sure if I'll ever know how to have fun again...rad law wrote:Honestly, my anxiety about literally everything in my life is out of control. Literally.dailygrind wrote:i get this, and a lot of "how'd you do?"rad law wrote:Everyone I know: "How's law school?"

i'm shrugging it off right now, but as time goes on grades occupy my thoughts more and more. it's not going to be good for my sanity.

If I get better grades than all the gunners in my section, I will be extremely happy. Even if I'm 72nd out of 80.jay115 wrote:i also don't get my grades until classes start. a bunch of 2Ls have told me intersection dynamics will change once grades come out (ie gunners who get B's will stop asking obnoxious questions). so, even if i fail all my classes, i can still hope for a little silver lining.dailygrind wrote:even though some profs will probably give out grades before then, that sounds like an absolutely shitty week. you're gonna see on everyone's faces how well they did, and it's probably going to be the topic of conversation for a few days, and maybe a week or two. sounds extremely awkward.rad law wrote: we get them a weekish after classes.

I love how SMU makes you wait until the next semester is paid for and non-refundable before you get your first grades.

I don't know if I'm happy about that or not...I guess we at least get a week to cry in the privacy of our own homes before going back to school.

Dropping out because you're merely above median at WUSTL would be ill-advised. You can always battle up to top quarter or better during spring semester. And OCI could still turn out for you if you interview well (something you won't really know until you see your OCI results).romothesavior wrote:I would almost certainly stick with it if I were above median, but the thought of dropping out would cross my mind, and I'm sure many on TLS would advocate it.plum wrote:seriously?romothesavior wrote:This puts me just above median, right in the "Stick with it, or drop out?" zone.

We get our grades well before it's all non-refundable. Since I go to my state school, this makes me feel a little less TTT than usualbeach_terror wrote:Same here. I knew I shoulda went to law school over the bridge, sonofa. Although, living a life laden with debt and depression might still be better than living in New Jerseykeg411 wrote:We get our grades well before it's all non-refundable. Re: 1L grade waiting thread
Well, there's a girl from my rival alma mater and my highschool in law review, so there are expectations for me to meet.
I know I passed legal writing (it's not graded), and I covered a ton of ground in my torts exam (and got a good amount of constructive criticism from the prof during the practice exam). Crim law worked out well (had plenty of time, and managed to follow the review without difficulties), and I don't think anyone was ready for Civ Pro (though the Beatles references were cool...I managed to stick one in myself). So, my guesses:
A- Crim
A to A- Torts
B- to B+ Civ Pro
B to A- Contracts
At the minimum, I want my scholarship intact...

So if you got below median you would probably or definitely drop-out? Even from WUSTL? Re: 1L grade waiting thread
I don't think there is any way I would drop out after one semester, no, but I'm sure it would at least cross my mind. I would more seriously consider it depending on what my job prospects were like after first year if I was significantly below median. I'm certainly not biglaw or bust and I think I want to be a prosecutor if I can't get a decent private firm job, but I'm not really enjoying law school to this point and I don't know if it would be worth it to go further into debt if I missed being on a journal and was well under median.Lawquacious wrote:So if you got below median you would probably or definitely drop-out? But let's hope this isn't something I have to think about much more.

Re: 1L grade waiting thread
@Romo. Cool man, thanks for clarifying. Yeah, def. hope you do well, and I imagine you prob won't face that dilemma (of being below median). If I end up around median, especially after the full first year, I think I would def have a hard time accepting it, and in my case I'm at a considerably lower-ranked school that you (T50 though). I basically decided that I'm going to stick with law school pretty much no matter what (as far as it is in my control) despite my concerns about jobs and my questions about the fit of being a lawyer in general. I just think I'll be way more pleased with myself in the long run knowing I completed the degree v. feeling like a quitter for dropping out. I realize there are economic factors in the balance, but paying a considerable amount for a degree never completed doesn't seem to make as much sense to me as completing it even if it doesn't pay off right away or maybe is only used indirectly as an additional knowledge and skill base for going into a non-legal job.
I've heard that right after 1L grades come out (I think esp. 1st semester grades but am not sure) is when people start to really question whether its worth it. I know I'll really struggle with it if I don't grade well, but I feel I'm committed to finishing the J.D. regardless. And I do have genuine questions and concerns about whether legal practice is right for me aside from the financial and job concerns. However, I know I am def interested in law generally, and I have found pursuing my interests seems to pay off in the long-run for me.
