I was mostly joking that people drink Johnny Walker Red when they want scotch but don't want to spend money. It does not make me vomit either, which is similarly all I can say in its favor.Gecko of Doom wrote:I drank some the other day just to see if it was as bad as I was remembering. A dram of an 18 year old at $100 is pretty much par for the course. I think the Highland Park is right up there with the Macallan 18 but significantly cheaper.albanach wrote:It's $100 in state monopoly VA. Nice whisky, but there are lots of nice whiskies once you reach $100 a bottle.TemporarySaint wrote:Can't believe I didn't see this earlier. Pick up Highland Park 18. One of the best valued bottles I own.

A quick Google shows it sells some places for around $75. The retail price before sales tax and duty (25ish %) in Scotland appears to be about 40GBP / $64.TemporarySaint wrote: A dram of an 18 year old at $100 is pretty much par for the course. At $100 a bottle plus sales tax, someone somewhere is making a very tidy profit.

And I'd really hope you get the whole bottle for $100, not just a dram!TemporarySaint wrote: A dram of an 18 year old at $100 is pretty much par for the course. I think the Highland Park is right up there with the Macallan 18 but significantly cheaper.

Boo. A friend bought me a bottle of Makers as a gift. It was really nice, but it delays my new scotch purchase by at least a week

Bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 12, drank it straight from the bottle with a group of friends. It was delicious, delicious blasphemy.

Jameson, although not scotch, is very nice by itself.

Also, all you bourbon and scotch lovers need to go buy this, stat. It is worth every penny of the $70 and will completely change your outlook re: agave products.

I wonder if it's possible to distill a computer - preferably a macbook.

I'd be interested in trying this. I've always wanted to know what pretentiousness tastes like.ResolutePear wrote:I wonder if it's possible to distill a computer - preferably a macbook.

I tried the Macallen 12 year and loved it. Instead of getting a bottle of that, I decided to try aushentoshen 12 year for my splurge this week. ::kicks self:: It's good stuff, but lacks the flavor that the macallen had. Next week, I'm going to get a bottle of 18 year. Is the macallen 18 similar/worth the upgrade? How is highland park in comparison? Other recommendations in that same type?
Also, I've never had mezcal. Good starter?

question: does my love of rum and mere toleration of scotch make me less of a man/future attorney?

Not as long as you mix it into a classy cocktail. A cuba libre is always credited.

It's mezcal. Also made from fermented agave, like tequila, but with two main differences - first, tequila is usually distilled twice and mezcal only once, so the finished spirit has a lot more depth, and second, mezcal is made from different types of the agave plant, which makes its flavor profile highly dependent on the particular region and even the particular city or village where it is distilled.thesealocust wrote:smokyroom26: I was at a bar and somebody almost poured a shot of that but then backed off. That being said, there is a lot of truly nasty mezcal out there (usu mass-produced brands), and nasty mezcal is much, much worse than nasty tequila. But the artisanal stuff - Los Danzantes, Del Maguey, Los Amantes and the like - kicks ass neat in a snifter.

Sounds like the wine-esque terroir element. nicesmokyroom26 wrote: flavor profile highly dependent on the particular region and even the particular city or village where it is distilled.

Ah, don't. I don't think the point is what you drink, it's that you drink.

Well, on the hierarchy of people to hang out with, someone that does not drink is automatically suspicious and should be avoided. Bro Light and lime is obviously a less credited choice than some, but it is cheap and widely available. Besides, if you start out on fratty light, then this is obviously a step up.
The only acceptable cheap college kid beer is PBR. If there's one way to get called out for drinking underage, it's drinking PBR and paying for it in loose change. Party on.

You are forgetting High Life, the champaigne of beers. Yes, the first one tastes like ass, but after one you are good to go.
