Re: Memo 1
i want the memo to be graded because it'll give me that extra boost of motivation that i need.
cuz pretty much, when u are in the law firm, the memo-writing skill seems to triumph any other thing you learn from law school.

Re: Memo 1
final draft of memo#1 due tomorrow. The guy gave very few comments on rough draft and he doesnt care about blue booking. The case is hard tho, much harder than the ones given to the other sections.
But, P/F, although I hear there is a high pass.
Memo is still ruining my Sunday.

Re: Memo 1
Finally done with mine. It's just under the 1100 word limit and is a little weak. For whatever reason our instructor omitted the one case that actually supports the defendant's position (the other lawyering sections got this case), so about 1/3 of the memo talks about BS qualitative differences.
I think P/F is detrimental to the extent that it causes us (or more specifically, me) to not put in the effort necessary to produce quality writing. On the other hand, I would probably get raped by the class if it were graded and there would be an annoying incentive to put far too much work into the class, at the cost of putting insufficient effort into the other classes.

Re: Memo 1
some of you guys can P/F writing?! man..... we joke about it all the time in class as something at the very top of our wish list. anyone else have stuff due EVERY single day for writing? we get a bunch of "mini" assignments ranging from briefs to doing a particular section of a memo on various cases and hypos. these easily kill a couple hours of my day. my memo is due tues by the way.

Yup our legal practice class is P/F.
It doesn't stop it from sucking though.
I'm working on my memo now and I'm loathing life. I hate that I have to DVR Entourage for this.

Is anyone else forced to do research the old fashioned way? They won't even give us Lexis/Westlaw access until our second semester here.

Re: Memo 1
we've been bombarded with the whole Lexis/Westlaw pitch already.
In any case, our first memo is a closed memo so all of the materials are already provided and we aren't allowed to use other sources. However, I've been using Lexis to generate the citations so I don't have to copy all that gibberish by hand.

I'm having a hell of a time keeping this memo under the 6 page limit we've been assigned.

Re: Memo 1
I find that interesting. I think a lot of it depends on what your undergrad major was. Us technical folks (I was a CS undergrad) didn't have problems keeping it under 7. Most of the IR/Poly Sci types had it pretty rough trying to write concisely.

Re: Memo 1
I don't care who you are, < 6 pages double-spaced (at 12 point font no less!) is incredibly restrictive. The "example" we were given is basically 5 pages single spaced. Sure it's possible to keep it under that limit but I'm almost positive that there is almost no way to do so without sacrificing substance and leaving some arguments unaddressed (or only poorly so). That's not something I'm comfortable with doing although maybe that's what is expected of us.

Re: Memo 1
Our is 7 pages, double spaced, 14 font, and I only ran onto the 7th page for a few sentences. I know other people that had there's done in just 6 pages. I think it strongly depends on your topic, and how many cases you have to cite, etc.

Re: Memo 1
damn, memo 2 is due tomorrow. These preliminary memos aren't graded though, only the one big memo at the end is graded. My first memo was a piece of crap but my profs had nothing but nice things to say about it. I think they're going to be a little tougher with the comments this time around.

And ours has a hard limit at 4 pages, double-spaced. Plus, I woke up today feeling a cold coming on.

Wow that's tiny. That's a mere page of discussion when you include the header, question, conclusion, etc. How much can you really "discuss"?Summer Saint wrote:Hastings.IStillPlayVideoGames wrote:Wow, Summer, where are you at?

I need to prune a good page and a half still.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
