Ah, so all the bumps were before final grades were posted. I was curious because many schools have strict policies on challenging grades (at my school the only way to get your final grade changed is if there was a calculating error). You might find professors vary in how they treat grading--some will not let class participation or office hours affect grades at all; rather, your final grade is simply what you did on the exam. Congrats on maximizing your grades, but your advice might not apply to many professors.mirodh wrote:Each situation varied, but in every case I knew before grades were posted that I got the bump I was after.Richie Tenenbaum wrote:Did you find out from your professors that you got a bump on your final grade after meeting with them or did you get a certain grade and then go meet with them, which resulted in a grade bump?mirodh wrote:Maybe generally, but not in here grammar endeavors. Yes, I all were before posting. Of course profs differ, but one class was one which class participation was not a component at all. I'm not suggesting using office visits as a proxy for class participation, but instead letting it be known that if you don't get x grade it is really going to hurt you and forcing the prof to at least face making that decision.

I dont know if I'm more disturbed by the suggestion that this works in law school, or by the suggestion that this is how people get through undergrad.

I used to teach undergrad, and I can tell you that "but I need to keep my scholarship/rank/get an A in this class to make up for failing chemistry" or whatever were absolutely ridiculously useless excuses that got you nowhere. If that's how this poster got through UG, they went to a crap school with crap profs. The only reason for a grade to go up is if the prof made a mistake and there's some merit to the exam/assignment/whatever that was overlooked. Getting a grade bumped because you "need" a higher grade is bullshit.

I never actually needed to do this in UG. But I was friends with a couple of the younger profs and they mentioned they would help out kids who were honestly trying but just couldn't quite get there. Regardless, your personal feelings about something being bullshit doesn't mean others felt the same. Honestly, if it works/helps 1/4 definitely still worth it (this semester I was at least 50%).A. Perhaps the reason you're facing such a negative reaction, OP, is that most people here (and probably most people in general, if you were to ask them) are of the opinion that if you can only achieve your goals by asking your professors to give you grades you didn't earn, you don't belong in law school in the first place.

Yea, OP, why didn't you just score the A without panhandling?

No, actually, all the profs I knew felt the same. It's one thing to reward effort for a student who has been working really hard all semester and is borderline between 2 grades. It's totally completely different thing to give someone a higher grade because they "need" it. (And honestly, I'm not convinced you got any bump, since you met with profs before grades were released - it's not like you know what you would have got without those meetings).mirodh wrote:I never actually needed to do this in UG. I'm talking about combining the first and second. I worked hard, was borderline, and then added in the I need this aspect. Multiple profs specifically said it was good I came to let them know, etc.A. How do you know you were borderline? Most grades are based entirely on the exam.mirodh wrote:I'm talking about combining the first and second. Your clients will enjoy your idealism leading to less than optimal results.zworykin wrote:Perhaps the reason you're facing such a negative reaction, OP, is that most people here (and probably most people in general, if you were to ask them) are of the opinion that if you can only achieve your goals by asking your professors to give you grades you didn't earn, you don't belong in law school in the first place.

My two best examples are a seminar which had work throughout semester and a class which was a bs class where the prof simply bunched everyone on the curve. The first situation I talked to prof after turning if final assignment but before grades were posted, second situation I talked to prof at the beginning of the year. Both profs made it clear it was good I talked to them and that people in the past with similar situations had "ended up doing well," etc. Please don't quote this response.A. So, what you're saying is that in neither case do you have any idea whether or not your begging actually made a difference. You could have actually earned whatever grade you received.mirodh wrote: My two best examples are a seminar which had work throughout semester and a class which was a bs class where the prof simply bunched everyone on the curve.
