I don't know if anybody is looking at this thread anymore, but I want to thank its author and the other posters for giving me the conviction to self-study for the bar. I too graduated around median, and by buying last year's bar review books off Ebay, I successfully passed the TN bar on the first try.

It's super satisfying to re-read a certain Barbri salesman's emails (His name is Chuck) and see, in response to my question about a registration deadline for one of the Barbri scholarships, "no deadline, but I don’t want to be played against the competition. It’s a great deal and we have a much better product than everyone else. Don’t be pennywise and pound foolish when it comes to the bar exam."

Well, I was pennywise, Chuck, and I saved about $1500.
