2 button or 3 button?
Which JAB suit style is recommended? Signature, Signature Gold, Platinum, Executive, or Joseph suits?

Def 2 button unless you are NBA-player tall.Extension_Cord wrote:2 button or 3 button?

2 button. I'd wait for a big sale. There should be a big one for thanksgiving.kaiser wrote:Def 2 button unless you are NBA-player tall.Extension_Cord wrote:2 button or 3 button?

Take the jos bank shirt, hang it next to a poly shirt. Compare the sheen of the material (mostly for colored shirts), the thickness of the material, whether the whites are as transparent, and compare the stitching in the collar.kaiser wrote:Now that I look at my shirts, I guess all my nicest ones are my 100% cotton Jos. A Bank shirts I really like. I never thought the blended shirts look like crap though. They always seem to look fine. How exactly can you spot the difference? You say that people can have a sharp eye for this, so what exactly are they looking for?

I disagree, you have to be tall to pull off 3 but not NBA player tall. If you're over 6 feet, try on both and see what looks better. If you do go with a 3, make sure it is a 3 roll 2 not a true 3.kaiser wrote:Def 2 button unless you are NBA-player tall.Extension_Cord wrote:2 button or 3 button?

2 Button is the way to go regardless. Just looks sharper if it's tailored right.
On that note, unless you are an exact suit size, spend the 50-100 extra bucks and have a tailor take it in where it needs taking in. This is what makes a suit look good, not the label or the quality of the fabric (within reason, don't ever do anything synthetic)
Also spend the money on BB shirts. It's worth it. I'm cheap when it comes to housing, food, booze, and entertainment but this is your professional career. Looking professional is worth the couple extra bucks

I like the regular signature. You can get one for around $238.50 before tax and alterations if you wait for the right sale. Get on the mailing list. They were like $260 yesterday.top30man wrote:2 button. I'd wait for a big sale. Executives and Josephs are good too. Josephs are the more contemporary cuts and have hand stitching in the lapels. Not really my style.
Signature golds also have hand stitching, but they're more expensive than I would think a law student would need. Never wore a platinum.
3 buttons are generally for taller people, but if you're really skinny and taller than 5'7" they can look good.

I thought I posted this, but you guys are saying to avoid ventless suits right? I have never seen anyone in a ventless suit. At the moment I have a black suit, Navy blue with a very subtle pin, and a tan suit. I need a nice Navy one (how do people look at 3 piece? I think they are awesome)

don't do ventless. it looks tacky. dual vent is more euro and single vent is more classic/cary grant look (yes I he was born in Europe)AssumptionRequired wrote:I thought I posted this, but you guys are saying to avoid ventless suits right? 3 piece can look good if its tailored right. Tho not as easy to pull of as people on tv make it look.

Myth, depends on your body type. I look better in 3 roll 2s myself. Don't know why, just do.2 Button is the way to go regardless. Just looks sharper if it's tailored right.
No one, I repeat no one, is an exact suit size and even if one were to be an exact suit size, one would still need to have the suit tailored to conform to the rest of the body. Think of a suit as "some assembly required" its not complete until it has been tailored. On that note, unless you are an exact suit size, spend the 50-100 extra bucks and have a tailor take it in where it needs taking in. The only jacket that should be ventless is a tuxedo jacket.I thought I posted this, but you guys are saying to avoid ventless suits right?

No one wears 3 piece suits anymore. I would definitely stay away from thatAssumptionRequired wrote:I thought I posted this, but you guys are saying to avoid ventless suits right? Can't go wrong with navy. I have a solid navy and a navy with thin pinstripe as well. I didn't feel like my black suit was really appropriate for interviews, so I bought a charcoal grey with thin pinstripe to have an alternative to all the navy.

I'd avoid pinstripes for interviews as well. The substantial majority of people at our OCI were in solid suits.kaiser wrote:No one wears 3 piece suits anymore. Mostly agree with this. I think it looks douchey in professional/serious situations but I think they can look good in less formal situations.kaiser wrote:No one wears 3 piece suits anymore. I would definitely stay away from that

Re: Calvin Klein Suit Jackets at Macys
The majority def were in solid, but I got enough positive approval of a thin pinstripe that I was comfortable wearing it. Even got a compliment on the navy pinstripe suit from one of my interviewers, so I don't think a thin pinstripe is per se a bad idea for interviews. I have a quasi-friend who is a partner at a firm who laughed at me when I suggested that perhaps a thin pinstripe was inappropriate, so thats def not a prob solely because most people choose not to go with it.Veyron wrote:I'd avoid pinstripes for interviews as well. Three piece suits, suspenders, and white collars with colored shirts- stay away from these things until you are a partner or an executive. Some people say the same thing for french cuffs, but I think that holds a little less weight.

6'3 you could theoretically do either. Try on both.Extension_Cord wrote:Im 6'3, should I stick with 3 button or is 2 button still recommended?

I think they have buy one suit get two for free. Which, in actuality is basically just 66% off- which is pretty close to their normal 65% off sales they offer on their suits. It just sounds like a much better deal.Extension_Cord wrote:How good of a sale does JAB have around Thanksgiving?

Interesting feedback on 2 v. 3 buttons. All of my suits have three buttons. I've never really thought about it, but I've always thought that two-button suits look mis-proportioned on me. I'm 5'11, but war refugee thin (so maybe I have the proportions of someone taller?).
Thoughts?

At 5'11 its not unreasonable that a 3 button would look better on you, especially if it was a 3 roll 2. I find that 3 buttons often work better on long and thin people.mrloblaw wrote:Interesting feedback on 2 v. 3 buttons. All of my suits have three buttons. I'm 6'5" and go exclusively 2 button. You could do rolled 3 but I still think 2 looks betterExtension_Cord wrote:Im 6'3, should I stick with 3 button or is 2 button still recommended?

Again, not all 6'5" people are built the same. 3 looks better on some, 2 on others. Button choice is about more than just height.fathergoose wrote:I'm 6'5" and go exclusively 2 button. Yeah you only want natural materials for dress clothes: cotton shirt, silk tie, wool suit, leather-soled shoes, leather padfolio, metal cross pen, etc.
Macy's is generally a bad idea for suits. They have shitty fused suits from designer labels that are outrageously priced.
