Google Scholar has westlawnext like qualities and is free. LOVE the "usually cited" section. I usually start there and then head over to classic lexisnexis.

+1. Exactly what I do. Also if you become a student member of your state bar, you often get something like CaseMaker for free that gives you all federal case law and case law from your state for free.
