Anyone else finding that they have a lot of free time..? Forum

Until recently I haven't had much "free" time, but I haven't by any means been stressed or scrambling to finish.

The better I get at reading the material efficiently though, the more free time I'm finding I have. I am at least on pace with the syllabus in every class, ahead in a couple, and look--I still have time to dick around on TLS when I don't feel like reading.

If you understand everything I wouldn't worry too much. Your speed will probably improve.

300 pages a week? I have somewhere between 20-30 pages per class meeting.. excluding LWR that's only about 150 per week.

I have 30 pages per class too, average, but that's per meeting, I have 5 classes that meet twice each per week, that's 300 pages...

yikes. I'm only taking 3 classes that meet twice a week + LWR once a week. We have LWR reading but it's such a breeze that I'm not including it in my calculations of pages.

Per class based reading we only have about 20 pages. LRW cases were long, but we haven't had any reading of any more cases since the first couple weeks. The only really difficult reading for me tends to be contracts (don't have con law this semester). Torts and criminal law are fun and rather fast to read.

glad to know I'm not the only one struggling with contracts readings. it all seems so simple in class, but then the readings take me for f-ing ever, WAY longer than others. but our con law has only been introductory chapters in the book, we don't start the cases till next week. so maybe i'll change my mind.

I still include facts in my notes is so I won't have to take my casebook to class. The rest of that stuff you need anyway (reasoning/issue / holding)

Alternative 2 is to write the citation so I can bring it up on Westlaw but I always forget.

i briefed every case except for the tiny torts cases all through 1L year

it actually really helped when it came time to make my outlines -- i didn't have to read through the book to refresh my memory, all i had to do was read my briefs

Why not use canned briefs? Seems like a waste of time to brief every case yourself.

idk, it worked out really well for me first semester and second semester. i just figure i won't change it at this point; it's not that big of a time-waster.

Then just read over the case in a manner which lets you understand it.


As for reading, I have been doing 20-30 pages per day total. So 100-150 a week. I guess we have a lighter load here than some of y'all.

I talked to a friend that just graduated, and a current 3L, and both said the same thing...

The first month or so, a lot of people will freak out because they have more free time than they think they should have. But then the Writing/Research papers start coming due, midterms, etc. and before you know it you have barely any free time, just like you expected.

This is basically how I feel. I went out drinking 4 nights last week. It would've been 5 but I went to the movies instead. I feel like I'm missing something because other people seem to be studying all the time, but I'm already doing all the readings, book briefing the cases, and going to class. I can't for the life of me figure out what the hell else I would spend time studying this early in the semester.

Of course, I may be singing a different tune after I get my first semester grades.

Haha, it will feel so good when its over. I turned mine in on Monday. Waiting to get brutalized though then I will go back to feeling like a chump.

Each week I've been studying:

3 days for 12 hrs.
2 days for 8 hrs.
2 days for 4 hrs.

My study hours vary because some days I have 1 class and others I have 4. I'm getting 7-9 hrs. sleep per night and I don't feel groggy until the end of each day. I'm not killing myself but I do stay productive. I've spoken with classmates who're taking the weekends off and/or studying for about 4 hrs./day and say they "get it." I don't buy it. Speaking with them I see gaps in their understanding of the material...gaps that have the potential to grow in to huge deficiencies:

• They comprehend a case, but they don't understand it in way that allows them relate it to the overall framework of the course.
  They know the rule, but misunderstand the reasoning it took to get there.
  They don't know which supplements, restatements, hornbooks, etc., are best suited for the specific course.
  They don't see the direction of the course.

Learning BLL is key, but it will be hard retain it all and to apply it with dexterity if you don't see how everything ties together.

And you know all this three weeks in? I study just about as much as you do, but I don't really think the amount of hours is the problem. It's more like you see all of the aforementioned or you don't, but at this point if you can confidently claim to see all of that I think yoar doing it rong.
