I think this is the worst thread title of all time. Not worst in the sense that it displays stupidity or poor taste, but worst in a substantive, moral sense.
"A true tragedy: death as excuse" suggests that in OP's mind, not only is the the recent death of a spouse insignificant, but that it's a true tragedy that he's being inconvenienced by it.

No, the guy called in and said he couldn't come into work because he had passed away. I told him to bring a doctors note.
