Try EverNote. It's free, customizable, and it automatically backs up your notes to the website for multi-computer access or (god forbid) in case your computer dies.

This helped me figure out how to use Notebook for law school. It definitely involves some practice but pays off in the end.

Much more efficient than Word.

One big benefit of circus ponies is the ability to add external files and embed them into your notes right where you need them. If I get a handout or an email from the professor, I can scan it, then drag it right into my outline for that class. It is then saved within the notebook file, so my online backup is up to date and all of my files are contained within a single icon.
